She* had only Commander to beat, as Mikotani and^ Don Carlos fell. Tatigaimoana's success in the Manawatu Cup was very popular. Her owner. Mr David Buick, M.P., is a vice-president of the club. She had not previously stayed further than a mile and a-quarter, and con°equently was not one of the fancied candidates. S. Reid rede Tingraimoana. 31b' overweight, and won by the narrowest of margins from Blue Ribbon, Paritutu's half-sister, winner of a hack race on the first day. Kopu appears to be paying for his Hawke's Bay Guineas win. The Officer gelding Longner beat a decent field in the Gillies Hack Handicap. He carried 8.10. and ran six furlongs in lmin 15=ec. Longner pulled up scxe. and may not be seen out at the Rangitikei meeting. The connections of Passive (sister to Replete) were most unfortunate in the Grand Stand Handicap. She weighed out 2ilb overweight, bur failed to declare it. The race, worth ISCsovs to the winner, was jriven ro Sir' Antrim. Flotilla and Full Rata were plaecd second and third. S. Messena. _ the Foxton owner-trainer, opened the season at Ashurst with a double win, Guineas and Cup, with two of the .progeny of Conqueror and Waipuna. Waipake is engaged in the Wairarapa Cup. a/nl the stable will be represented in rhs Rangitikei Cup by Waitapu. Tangaimpxna ran a good race in the Ashurs- Ctip under 9:4. Hipporoffla jumped badly in the Trial Hurdles, -and Moose beat him easily at the end. Moose (Sonnester — Natator mare) is a splendid jumper, and will be heard of again. He showed some form at FeWing-. and is engaged at Rangiiikei. George Hope brought off a surprise in ihe Firing Hack Handicap with Taumano (King George — Millenium). The three-year-old Roosevelt (Mensehikoff — Yankee Kate) pur up a penalty for a win at Palmerston. and scored in the Eomato Welter Hack Handicap. Tumut won the Pohangina Handicap from end to end. Conquestina (Conqueror — Laurestina) had too much pace for her opponents in the Maiden Hack Hard ; ca,p. The place-getters. Fond Meracry (Merriwee — Tuhirangi) and Toanga (Conqueror — Nioiti). can both 'go fast. Hatch rode Conquest ina, and also scored in the n-ext race on Lethean. Mi»s Ver/i made her second appearance in this event, an 1 beat all except the winner. The first batch of the progeny of the imported hcr^e Sh* Laddo were submitter! by tho Manawatu Stud Company at Palrnerston thh weak. Sir George Clifford /arave 150gs for a brown colt from Purity.
