SUBSIDISED BAND SUGGESTED. CTxoif Our Own Corbesfonbbkt.) CHBISTCHURCH, January 4. Speaking at the Competitions Society's concert on Satuiday evening, Mr J. Shoit. the King's Trumpeter, said that there appeared to be a large amount of latent talent in the ranks" of brass instrument playeis in New Zealand, and he tuggested that if the best players could be brought together permanently New Zealand could own one of the finest bands in the world. It might be "possible for the Government to subsidise the good players, and so secure to the country one glorious band. The suggestion might not be a pract ;^able one at present, but there were possibilities in it. There were players quite as good in New Zealand as there were elsewhere, and it was a pity to have a large number of bandi> made up of a few- solo piaver*. while the middle of the band uiade Jiot music, but a noise.
