VALEDICTORY AT NASEBY. A Jarge number of Mr M'Ennis' s friends i assembled on- fclie 22nd at the Council l Chamber, Naseby, to mark the occasion of bis retiring from the bench and, leaving the . district, where he has exercised his jcidi- ' cial authority for the last eight and a-haif I years. Mr J. P. Smith (Mayor) occupied. . the chair, and voiced the opinions of tiiosQ present in his references ,to Mr M'Ennia's successful career as a magistrate and warden, his generous and kindly . disposition as a citizen, and in expressing the hope thati there would etill be very many years ol useful and happy life to their guest of the* afternoon. It was with much pleasure thac. on behalf o$ the townspeople of ICasebr, he presented Mr M'Ennis with a large silver tray, which bore , the inscription:! "Presented to James M'Ennie, Esq., S.M. T by his Naseby friends, on hie retirement. December, 1908." Mr Smith at the same time handed him a' gold bracelet for Miss, M'Ennii", as a token of remembrance. Mr M'Ennis, in replying, spoke of the goodwill arid good feeling' that he always met- with on the goltlfields, both^ here and on the West Coast, and thanked" the Mayor for his'kind words and wishes and for the preeent he. had just received. At the call of 'the Mayor, three hearty, cheers were given lor Mr M'Ennis. At the close of the last court for the year at Ophir, Messrs Bartholomew, M'Kean, M'Neil, and Davey, representing the local Bar, and Mr Maeassey, on behalf of the Dunedin Bar, all spoke in complimentary terms of Mr M'Ennis's unfailing courtesy and attention to business, and to the good feeling that was at all times manifested between Bench and Bar.
