MEMORIAL PILLAR. CHRISTCHURCH, December I§. One of the moat interesting of th« methods of celebrating the fifty-eijyhth. anniversary of the foundation of Canterbury on Wednesday next will be that proposed? by the Canterbury Old Colonists' Association. This \rill take the form oi placing in position a stone pillar on the site of the huts ercted in Hag-fey Park by the Bowen and Williams families, and others who •were passengers by the Charlotte Jane in g[ 1850. This will take place at noon, and the ceremony will be most appropriately performed by the Ron. C. C. BcVen, a' member of one of the families. In the evening there will be a social gathering in the Provincial Council Chamber, a place in which the foundations of Canterbury were laid by legislation. The association intend as time goee on to commemorate other historic sites by the erection ot stone pillars similar to the one to be inaugurated on Wednesday.
The milk-fed thoroughbred Azote, which, ran unsuccessfully in the Derby this year, broke its log during an obstacle race at St. Rouen, and had to be shot. Azote ran six times, and his best performance in a race was to finish fourth.
