ADULTERATED MILK. WELLINGTON, December 11
At the Magistrate's Court to-day, before Dr M'Arthur, S.M., 11 milk vendors were prosecuted by the Health Department for alleged adulteration of milk, in some cases there being more than one information. The prosecution alleged that defendants had sold adulterated milk without fully informing the purchaser at the time of the sale. The milk was alleged to have been adulterated in that it did not comply with the- standard prescribed by the regulations made under the authority of "The Sale of Food and Drugs Act, 1907," being below the standard required in total solids and in fatty solids. Counsel for two defendants submitted that the standard was unreasonable, that there was no proof that an excess of water had been added by the defendants, and that they had taken reasonable precautions. Fines of £2, with £3 15s costs; were inflicted in the following cases : — D. Kavannagh, Aspin, and Mason, F. S. Whitton, M. Sharp, Inglis and Copper, Thomas Packer. A. Stevens was convicted and ordered to pay costs only. Judgment was reserved iv the remainder of. the cases.
