RACING IN SEW ZEALAND.

LAKE COUNTY RACES. (Fbom Our Special Repoktee.) Fikst Day— Thursday, December 10. The Lake County Jockey Club, held its annual meeting on its prettily-situated course just outside Arrowtown to-day in - fine weather. The attendance was slightly larger than at the previous meeting, and the grand stand provided by Nature in the shape of an eminence overlooking the' course presented quite a gay appear- ■ a nee owing- to the presence of so- many ladies in bright summer costumes. The | track was in fine order, though a shower. J to lay the dust, which rose in ■ clouds as ' the horses travelled round, would have- been ! welcome. Owing to the absence of the 1 president (Dr Douglas) Messrs G. D^ Baird and G. Reid divided the duties of judge, and other officials of the dub did everything in their power to make the first day of the meeting a success. A number of little unavoidable" hitches occurred before the first race could be run, but once the ball was set rolling the sport progressed merrily. In many instances the fields proved very untractable at the barriers, and gave the., starter (Mr D. Richardson) a lot of trouble, and if some of the starts we*e not just exactly what might have been desired, there was very good excuse for it. The investments this year amounted to £1143, as against £1409 last year, when there were jno bookmakers on the course. This year '■ the club licensed three bookmakers, which may account for the falling-off in. the totalisator figures. The racing, generally speaking, was of an intersting character, a splendid race being witnessed in the Jockey Club Handicap, which was won after a hard battle by Rifle Range, who just managed to beat Lord Clutha by a short head. The Flying Handicap was another good race, and was won by Lord Clutha by fully three lengths. Quagga ran a good race in the First Counties' Handil cap, and managed to keep Dr Jim at bay lin a fine finish. Following are the results of the day's racing: — HANDICAP MAIDEN PLATE, Of 25sovs; second ssovs. Five furlongt. Mr J. Shaw's br h Fulmar, by Fulmen — Talisman mare, syrs, 9.0 (Radcliffe) 1 Mr M'Nay's Dunkenny, 9.0 (J. Oteen) ... 2 . Mr Russell's Dr Jim, 7.12 (Wingfield) ~. 3 ! M'llroy). 1 In an otherwise good start Baron Northburn refused to move, and took no part in the race. The field ran in. fairly close order to the straight, entering which Fulmar took charge, and going on won by two lengths from Dunkenny, who beat Dr Jim for second place by a length. Strathfillan was the first to show • out, closely attended by Lord Clutha, and three furlongs from home the two were on terms. Lord Clutha then went into the lead, and won rather eaeilv by four lengths. Post-card, who had always been, handy, came with a good run in the straight and beat Strathfillan by about three-parts of a length for second place. Time, lmin 21sec. When, entering the straight he was momentarily threatened by Dr Jim, but, stalling off his challenge, landed a winner by aoout two and a-half lengths, Nicello finishing about three lengths behind Dr Jim. Time, lmin 7eee. Second Day— Friday, December 11. ' The Lake County Jockey Club concluded its anrraal meefcing'at the Arrowtown course to-day, when> ther6 -wi* again a very fair attendance, not 'a few of those present travelling i>y % drag from Queenstown — a distance of come 14 miles. The weather was mot so fine as on the first day of the meeting, and the comfortable and commodious shed tha.t the club haa erected since laet j year ]Woved' & great 'boon,' as rain fell on j several occasions in 'the latter part of the j afternoon, and there was a bit of a scatter for shelter, of which there is a decided Boarcity abput the coiliee. The rain did not inte-^fere in the least with the running, it being no more than sufficient to damp the track and' lay the dust which had before been very bad, but it interfered very materially with the pleasure of the drive ■back to Queenetown, during which several heavy showers fell. The club licensed two ■bookmaker, and the money put through the totalisator readied £1236 — very close to the investments of the second day of Last year, which were £1357. The totalisator investments for the two days amounted to £2379, which is £387 short of last year, but taking bookmaki&rs' fees, etc., into account, the meeting comes out better financially than that of last year. The fields were much larger in most of the events than on Thursday, but the scratching pen wae very busy after the first few races. In the Franktbn Handicap a field of 12 was* reduced to one of four, and a somewhat eimila-r thing happened in the Farewell Handicap. There were come good finishes, notably in the Waiatipu Welter, the Cup, and the Frankton Hack Handicap. The starting was a marked improvement, Mr D. Richardson generally getting his fields well away toUetber. Dr Douglas (the club's president) took np his position as judge, Mr G. H. Romans carnied out the secretarial work expeditiously and well, and the other officiate gave all the assistance in their power. Results : — WAKATTPU HANDICAP HACK WELTER, Of 20soto; second 3sot«. Seaside was left at the post, and took no part In the race. The field ran in close order, and the finish was a remarkably ck> ; c one between Cashier, Simon Pure, and Viviarj^ who presented themselves pretty well abrea-t as they ran past the judge. To many, who were not, however, in such a good position' as the judge to decide, it appeared that the two leaders were Cashier and Vivian, with Simon Pure, very close up, third. Time, 51 l-ssec LAKE COUNTY CUP, Of 60sovs; second Ssovs. One mile and a distance. Mr P. Hogan's Siriu3, by Dreadnought — Planet, aged, 7.6 [inc. 41b over] (J.
