Entries for the New Zealand 'chess championship tournament c!o3e with the secretary to the New Zealand Chess Association at We'iington on the 12th infant. The final meeting for the season of the Ponsonby (Auckland) Chess Club resulted in -Jir Cousins winning the championship (and annexing Captain Duder's prize) by the narrow margin of half a game from Messrs Fair* and Harvey. The latter players tied for the second place as " runners up." They have decided to play off— the best of two games out of three. Mr Fairs won the handicap (Mr ■k-eals prize) with a clean run, Mr Harvey taking the second prize (the hon. secretary's) with two losses. The winner between Messrs Fairs and Harvey for pecond place- in the championship will win the piesident's prize. A delightful surprise ending is the following, which occurred in a game played in the Vienna C.C. :— White: KonQS,Q on X R v- £ °™?-. Xt 5 - Black: KonQRI, Qon X 6. White now played Q X 4, and Black replied Q x P eh. White moves his K-B 6, and Black cannot avoid the mate. For economy and effect this would be hard to befctj even in % constructed- position*
