On Wednesday evening- Mra Sim (ilussclburgh) gave a small darce. Tl.e house was beautifully decorated with flowers. Two rooms opositfe each other were used for dancing, and the musicians played in. the hall between ' the rooms. The drawing room mantelpiece was a lovely arrangement of salmon pink geranium, with fairy lights shining in between, the flowers. On Friday evening Mrs Ewen gave a delightful ball in the Art Gallery, which wes | very prettily decorated with pink, white, and red muslins, brought from the centre of the ceiling to all four corners of the room, then round the walls of the room were festoons of floral muslin. On the stage wore large pot plants and bowls of narcissi and fruit blossom. As usual the Picture Gallery was thrown open for the use of the guests, and ldttnges and easy chairs placed «obout. A beautiful aupper was served in the Water-colour Room. The tables were very prettily done with narcissi, a. krge silver bojv.l being the centre of the long- table and smaller vases round ft and ozj. the small tables. Mrs and Miss Ewen received their guests at the entrance to th© ball room, the former wearing a very handeomo black velvet .dress, with £ove!y rose point lace. The Northend Bowling Club opened their new green on Wednesday afternoon. In spite of the inclement weather there was a larga gathering of bowlers from other clubs and: of friends. Many ladies were presnt. The Pipe and Municipal Bar.ds gave eelectionf during the afternoon. Delicious afternoon tea. which was much appreciated, waa pr<x vided by a committee of ladies. The nerf green was much admired, and was in splen*" did condition. The grounds are tastefully laid out, and ar e well sheltered. On Wednesday evening a- veiy pleasant girls' dance was given in the- Victoria ,H«l!i by » number of young ladies who have nofe yet coin* out, A fair number of grownups^ were also invited, and - the , evening; ■was a most-enjoyable one. A dainty supper was served in the supper room, the tables being prettily decorated with spring flowers. Miss Bews and Miss B. Pilcher were joint secretaries. Humpty Dumpty opened on Thursday, md drew crowded houses for the three nights of the season. A matinee wjw also given on Saturday, when the children who flocked! to the theatre were enchanted with th e fua and frolic and the charming tableaux presented. Almost everyone in town must have attended the pantomime. The general impression seems to be that it was not co funny as "Mother Goose," but the mounting and staging were more gorgeous and spectacular. Mrs Cruickshank, Gala street, is visiting Dunedin. Mrs and the Misses Ellis (Merivale) arc visiting Invercargill. Miss M'Ooun, who has been visiting friends in luvercargill and the Bluff, left for the north on Monday.
