RACING IN NEW ZEALAND.

DUNEDIN JOCKEY CLUB'S SPRING MEETING. First Day — Wednesday, October 14. The weather wae cold, showery, and threatening for tiho opening day of the Dunedin Jockey Club's spring meeting, which was held 'at Wingatui on Wednesday Despite* the unfavourable weather, there was an excellent attendance, both inside and outside the enclosure. The track looked in splendid order, but was a. trifle dead and holding. Mr Piper's starting throughout the day was exceedingly good, and ho alwaj-3 had his fields well in line when the barriere rose. Mr W. Jamea handled the investments smartly, but some money was occasionally shut out owing to the d'ilatorinct-3 of investors or their uncertainty as to what they should back, the result being a rush at the last moment. Th© total put through the machires for tlio day was £6267, which is £521 10s short of last year's figures. Six bookmakers were licensed. Proceedings commenced with the Hurdle Race, which resulted in a bit of a fiasco, as running to the last fence Small Shot dwelt when taking off, and in bucking over the obstacle pitched clean across Leeside, the outcome of the cannon being that Leeside's rider rwaa unseated. From that out Leonardo had an easy thing. In the Trial Plato a field of a dozen faced the barrier, and Lady Ranald was tho smartest out. She led all the way until within a few strides of tho post, where Vladimar, who had boen running a triflo green, got up and won in tho laet couple of strides. Warsaw came from behind at the finish and got third place, just boating Montreal. Thero were two withdrawals from the Mosgiol Handicap, the pencil being put through th© names of St. Joe and Harvest. The field got away to a fair start as they wero walking up to the barrier, and Probable, on the outside, was smartest to begin. White Cockade ako began smartly, but Probable was first to the turn, approaching which a good deal of crowding took place, and White Cookade dropped back owing, ah was subsequently learnt, to being galloped on. Turning for the mile post, Saga- and Fandango raced up on tho outride and took charge. Throughout the race a good deal of chopping and changing took place ; in fact, with one or two exceptions, the horses appeared to be running their race in patches. Once- in the straight White Cockade, who nxado a run from behind when coming tip the, hill, took charge, and in an exciting finish between him and Probable, the latter drew out and won bj a length. After the race a protest was lodged against Probable on the ground of crossing while running to the first turnt after the start. Both. Probable Mid White Coekaxle bore evidence of having been galloped on during the race, and although? Probable b«nt in after leaving tihe poefc, the interference which White Cockade experienced apparently came from the bumping and crowding by those behind. The protest wae, after consideration, dismissed*. Sweet Angelus was smartest out in the

Electric Handicap, and led until a few strides from the post, where she commenced to tire, and Dabchick. wearing her down, won nicely. Petrovna showed up on the rails ineide th*e distance, but her advantage appeared to be gained by the leaden running wide from the turn. The large field in the Taioma Hack Handicap was beautifully lined up when the barrier rose, and all got well away except ' Liza, who appeared to be chopped out, the winner, a compact little colt by Obligado, Serenade, - came from behind as the field spread out, and when they straightened for home came thorough and won nicely. In the October Welter, Lone Star came through at the finish, and, ctftching the leaders a few strides ~Jrom the post, won nicely. The judge's verdict was in favour of Mango for second place, but many tnbught Heirloom was entitled to- that position. After the. placed borses, who were in close order, came Harvesrr EW-«>H-B!aclc, and Luresome. Time, lmin 32 4-ss-3c. Second Day— Thttbsday, October 15. The weather was fino bur-father dull for the "second day's racing of the Dunedin Jrttkey Club's spring meeting, which was held at the Wingatui course on Thursday. Persons of leisure are not too numerous about Dunedin, and therefore the attendance was only moderate. The track was a bit faster than on tho day pravious. and some good racing was witnessed. lne club officials were . mostly in attendance. Mr R- Ewing acting as judge and Mr H.v Piper as starter, the latter gentleman again being in excellent form at the barrier, bix bookmakers were licensed, and th* investments showed a decided falling off. Last y-ear, when there 'were no bookmakers on the course, the jsum -put through the machines was £5674; tlm year it was £4586, so that for the second day's sport there was a failing off of £1088. which, with the decrease of £521 10s for tfc& first day. makes a total decrease of £1609 10s tor tha meeting. Leonardo won the Hurdles nicely alter being prominent throughout, and Linda woji the Burneide Hack, which provided a good finish between the placed horses. In the Ranfurly Handicap all colouring on ths card lined at the barrier, and from a splendid sta.rt Dabchick and Harvest wore responsible for the pace-making. Saga came when heads were turned ior home, and,- once in line, put in a good run and won by a length. The stewards held an inquiry into the mare's running as compared with that of the previous day, and <Jxpr«Ss<>d themselves as being satisfied with the owner's explanation. It is understood that since the mare left Wellington there had been very little facility for exercising her and giving: her work. Aema was evidently improved by her race the previous day. aixl won the Dominion Handicap very easily. The two-year-olds behind her areevidently a very moderate lot at present. Lupulite began as smartly as usual in the Shorn Handicap, whilst Petrovna lost three or four lengths through getting chopped out at the barrier. Lupulite made such good uso of hu> lead that at one time he iiui'-t liave been boxen or eight lengths clear of his field. He. however, feiopped badly at the- finish, but lasted long enough to win by two lengths. Petrovna was unfortuante in not getting away better, as, if she had, on her running in the race ehe must have seriously troubled th» winner. Valdimar was always prominent in the Kaikorai Hack Handicap, and, although he had io haio the whip drawn on him at tho finish, he won by close on a length from Liza. Flavour came with a. good run at the finish, and just lx?at Cockleshell for third place. Cuirosettia was prominent in the earlier part of the Telegraph Handicap, but Heirloom was first into the straight. The latter was. how3\er. outpaced by Mango, who finally beat Casque on the post.
