HARES AS IMPORTED GAME.
At the Dunedin City Police Court on tho13th judgment was given in tho caee W. Beck (ranger for the Otago Acclimatisation Society) v. Frances Jceeph Sulli van. -^-Tho evidence showed that the" ranger for the society went out to Bumsklc 911 Dominion Day and saw a number of ca«?s of hares in the freezing works there?. The total number of hares -was 203, nr.d they were tho property of defendant, and were brought from Maniotofco County. Mr "W. C. MacGregor appeared for the society .iml Mr_ W. A. the Governor had power to declare by notification that any of the animals or birds then within the operation of the act might cease to be within its operation within any district, not that any bird or animal within any district might cease to be within the operation of the act. He was therefore of opinion that defendant had contravened the provisions of the aot, and must be convicted. The object of the prosecution had been attained by drawing attention to the provisions of the act, and he proposed, therefore, merely to convict defendant and order him to pay costs, £2 19s.
