An echo of the recent " lambing down '' I case in Gisborno^-was beard on the 7th, when Jos. Burke, licensee of the Record Reign Hotel, plaintiff in the liecfiirt libel ca6e against the Gisborne Tim«>, was found j 1 guilty of having huppliod liquor to George \ j Pearson, who was in a state of intoxica- I tion at the time. Burke was fined £10 and costs (£3 4s). An inquest was held on the 9th by Mr Barton, S.M., coroner, concerning the death of Edward James Ranger. Tlie finding was that "deceased met his death through a do?© of arsenic, telf-admini*;-tered." This is the first- ca?e heard locally under the new ac-t whereby a jury ' is unnecessary.
