WELLINGTON, September 15. Dr Chappie recently wrote to the Minister of Land*, appealing to him to purchase, on behalf of the Government, the Chatto Creek water rights for irrigation [ purposes. The Minister referred the matter to the Engineer-in-Chief of the Public Works Depaitmeut, and the latter has replied as follows:—" I consider it will be necessary to use extreme caution in dealing with all offers to the Government to sell water rights, and I do not think that an answer should be given in this case until we are in a position to know exactly that the water governed by the right will be available for inigating suitable land, and this cannot be done until the report by the officer of the Agiicultural DeiMitment is received."
