An eccentric-looking old man wa* pitting in an armchair before tho fire in. the smoke-room of one of the leading commercial hotels. His trousers were somewhat drawn up one lr'g, which was crossed over the other, exposing to view a brilliant i<xl, white, and blue stuped stocking; and noticing iH>me of tho company looking at it and smiling, lie said, with apparently much tatifcfaction : " Nice pattern that, it=n't if, gentlemen? I'll bel there is not another Lkc it in the room."' "I'll bet cigar= round that there ie," replied 'a youthful ronnnexial. '"Done,"' cried tho old man. "Where is it I.'1 .' " "On your other foot ! ' responded the bottor, with a triumphant laugh, which was generally joined in. " That's just whfie you mako a mistake," said the old man with a knowing wink. "I generally reckon on finding one flat in a company, and =t> come prepared. " He then pulled up the other l^g of In* trouper-), and, to the amusement of all bui the 10-cr, exposed a black -tot_k:ni; !
