POST AND TELEGRAPH OFFICERS.
MOTION OF SYMPATHY. WELLINGTON, September 18. The Conference of the New Zealand Post and Telegraph Officers' Absociation at present sitting in Wellington passed the lollowing resolutions to day :: — '* This Conference of the New Zealand Post and Telegraph Officers' Association places on let ord its sympathy with Messrs Cummins and Schmidts, members of the association, in the unfortunate position in which they were lecently placed by being falsely accused of theft and forgery, and hereby \ cry heaitily congratulates them on their happy and full acquittal. The conferpn< c also expresses indignation at the harsh manner in which they were treated | uhile under arrest, and trusts that never again will any of its members be subjected to such Star Chamber methods. The conference also hopes that the real j offenders will be detected and given j punishment tor the original offence, and for the crime which they committed in having innocent parties arrested, and the conference asks the department for an assurance that in future before officers are arrested the department will have reasonable evidence against them."
Mr Henniker Heaton has suggested as a possible source of great revenue to the Post Office a "service <J© luxe." His proposal is to have a threepenny stamp i66ued for use' on letters requiring immediate delivery. It would, in fact, correspond to the extra fee charged for an urgent telegram. Mr Henniker Heaton estimates that the adoption of this scheme — which would, however, only apply to the big towns and cities — would yield at the lowest computation a revenue of £250,C0Q a year to tb© Post Office*
