FRUIT AND VEGETABLES
The arrivals for the week included 736 cases from Sydney, 947 from Suva, 150 from Hobart, and 250 from Mildura. A few pines from Queensland, via Melbourne, also arrived, and 125 cases of repack oranges, 65 cases bananas, and 50 cases poorman oranges from Auckland were included in the week'e supplies. A few St. Michael oranges also came forward, in addition to moderate supplies of Canterbury applc§, and a small lxxt of cooking
pears. Passion Fruit. — Packers, 6e to 7s; halfgins, '2s 6d to 5s 6d; inferior, 3e to 4s 6d. Apples. — In fair supply. *Choice Lord Wolsleys, 8s 6d; mediums, 6s to 6s 6d; other varieties, 2d to 2£d per lb; Hobart French crabs, up to 10s 6d ; dessert— Hobart stunners, 10s bd to lls; other varieties, 86 6d to 9s 6d; Canterbury, 7s to Bs. Vegetables. — Cauliflowers, in better supply; local choice heads, 5s 6d to 6s 6d per sack ; medium,,- 3a to -4e 6d ; Victorian 4« to 6s 6d per dozen ; cabbages, 2s 6d to 4s per sack; inferior, Is ,to Is 6d. Turnips, table varieties, 2s 6d per sack. Carrots, plentiful, 2s M to 3s per sack. Parsnips, 3s 6d to 4s per saok. j ' IMPORT MARKET. Merchants state that business during the month has been fairly good considering the period of the year, and that the August record will be up to the standard of former years. During the week the Aotea has been discharging a number of short lines, whicfc have gone into distribution. Good dates continue in short supply. The new season's, crop, due here in November, will come to the market at ■ higher cost. Bag figs are scare at 3£d. A supply of ling fish to a bare market is expected about the end of Septembers Seeded raisins are in improved demand, and the market is, in consequence, a shade firmer. Champion's vinegar has been tariffed &y the agents at the following prices: — Brown, 10 cafes and upwards, 9s 3d ; leas quantities, 98 6d; crystal, 10 oases and upwards, 9s 9d; less quantities, 10s. Brilliantsbine has been tariffed as follows : — Twelve dozen lots, 7s 6d per dozen ; less quantities, 7s 9d. . The allowance of 2s per ton on deliveries of salt, ex wharf, has been abolished; owing to the recent rise in price. New season's Brazil nuts are quoted at 8d per lb. Weber's Swiss cigars, in packets of 250, are quoted at 17s per packet. A. shipment of Price's fancy soaps has been placed on the market. Force food is still unprocurable.
