ARRIVAL IN MELBOURNE
MELBOURNE, August 29,
The reception of the American, fleet was productive of the scenes of enthusiasm M'itnesfed at Auckland and Sydney. For the week visitois had been pouring into the city, and before daybreak the people began to stream outwards to the bay
By 11 o'clock, when the Connecticut led the warships through Port Phillip Heads, the bulk of the Melbourne residents were congregated along the foreshore or aboard the" myriad craft which covered the bay.
The white fleet was greeted with unbounded enthusiasm. Mi - Deakin and the Ministers and members of the Federal and State Parliaments met the fleet and went on board, and accompanied it to the anchorage off Gellibrand Lighthouse. The fine weather arid the gaily-dressed shipping contributed to producing a magnificent naval pageant. The usual salutes were fired. 1 During the afternoon Admiral Sjerry
