(a) Against a masitei like Gardiner, Scott elects to take no risks, and makes for an cpen game. The " Kelso Cross" admits of so \nuch difficulty that, presuming Scot*, was not prepared on it, he here shows good judgment. - (b) The strongest move, apparently. Grovcr against Heffner some years ago played 32 27, 4 8, 27 23. 8 12, 23 18, 3 7 18 11, 19 21, giving White the labour. (c) Again Scott elects the safest course, avoiding the risks of any other line, although the game generally seems pretty safe now. (d) On the signed score >f the game Mr Gardiner marked this move with a star, as the only move to draw.

DUMFRIES-SHIRE CHAMPIONSHIP. Mr J. C. M'Greorge. winaier of the Dumfriesshire Championship, is a well-known * competitor in the Scottish Championships,and a player of ability. After the fifth game had been played between Messrs M'Georgo and Whillans in this year's final for the Dumfriesshire Championship, the score stood level—.one win each and thiree drawn games — »nd the following was the sixth and last game played, which decided the championship in Mr M'George's favour.
