BURGLARS AT WORK.

; OAMARU, August 19. I What appears to be an impudent attempt at burglary was perpetrated during the r \ night. The premises of EL Grenfell, out- ! fitter, Thames street, vreve entered by a - back window, and although nothing co far is "missing, the -office contents were I considerably ransacked, and some money " lying in a box bandy "was apparently over- ( looked. Further tip the street the back [ window of Mollisom's boot warehouse was . i broken and the workshop entered. Here, . again, nothing appears to have been , taken. The police believe the work to be ' that of juveniles. ; ' CHRISTC.HUKCH, August 20. [ It is reported that the store of Mr I j Collins, of Templeton, was entered on ' Tuesday night by burglars, and a number of articles of value stolen, among them , being about a dozen watches and a quantity of wea r inj apparel. [ ! UNEXPLODED GELIGNITE. , ! NEW PLYMOUTH, August 21. i ! Shortly after midnight the head waiter 1 ' at the White Hart Hotel, returning from ■' , a daaice, disturbed what appeared to have I been preparations by burglars to break 5 , open the landlord's safe. In the sittingl j room adjoining the bar, where the safe ; ' stands, there were found four plugs of ; j gelignite, two with caps attached, and I two lengths of fuse. The window of the - [ bar parlour was open, and a light was 5 , found in the sitting-room. On approach- - , ing the hotel the waiter noticed two men [ about the premises, but attached no iml portaoice to their presence until the dis- [ oovery was made which leads to the sup- .- ■ position that a clumsy art/tempt was about ' , to be made to rob the safe. ; > On the 15th inst. information was re- : ceived that Mr Field, the proprietor of the i Apiti Hotel, had been robbed of a sum » of about £100 (says the Feilding Star). ■ The money was in the hotel cash-box, [ which Mr Field kept in his room, and I included cheques, notes, and silver ; -and [ so far as is known, it was taken on Friday , night. The thief or thieves must have I effected a burglarious entrance to the 1 room^ -and they were evidently no strangers r j to the place.
