LAND AND WATER

An enthusiastic Ashburton angler informed a Mail reporter that the prospects for the coming fishing season are very encouraging. He had occasion, of late, to visit various portions of the Ashburton river-bed, and on inspecting the deepest holes, -when the water was clear, he found them abounding' in fairly large-sized trout, which appeared to be in good condition. There wae also evidence of an unusually large number of fish near the mouth of the river. Taken as a whole, the presnt season ha-s been very favourable for the fish.
