PRESS COMMENT. LONDON, August 24.
The Times says that the Sydney welcome to the fleet makes it clear that the possible political issues have been kept £o much in the background that their mention in the comments of the British and American prows is felt almost as an intrusion. The paper emphasises the opinion, that Australian minds, from the highest to tne lowest, are occupied with tho pleasure of giving hospitality and entertaining and welcoming their country's friends and with a feeling of pride in their position as the Empire's representatives.
There were 386 ves~el% excluding warships, of 799.178- tons grots, under construction, in the United Kingdom at the close of the quarter ending June 30, this tonnage being- 48,000 less than the figure at tie close of the preceding quarter, while it is also the lowest recorded since 1896. In order to prevent a large number of Chinese sailors who do not know English from suffering under the new language test, the Board of Trade states that Chinamen in English ports may be shipped to Eastern ports for the next three months, provided they are discharged before the chip returns to the United Kingdom.
