HIDE SALES. MELBOURNE, August 20.

Afc the hide sales there was excellent competition, and the market was firm. Kips were specially active. Th-3 Otago Farmers' Co-onerative Assoj ciation of New Zealand (Lta.) report : On ! Thursday, at our usual fortnightly hid© 1 sale, we offered a large catalogue of hides, I yearlings, and calfskins to a full attendance 1 of buyers. The greater portion of our I catalogue wag composed of country hides. I a number of which showed the effects of ' the recent rains. The balance of the cata- ! lojrue comprised butchers' and medium- ', weight abattoir hides. Competition was | keen for each lot offered, and prices were I firmer than these ruling at our last offering. As we had no heavy hides forward for this sale, we have no exceptional prices to quote. Quotations : Prime stout heavy ox, none offering; heavy, 5d to 6d; thinner, 4d to sd ; medium heavy, -4id to s|d ; light. 3|d to 4^d - r heavy cow, 4d to 4jjd ; medium, 3£d to 4-id ; stag, 2£d to 3id ; bull, 2d to 2|<3 ; yearling, 2£d to 4d ; calfskins, 4£d to s£d; horse hides, to 7s 6d. Messrs Donald Reid ami Co. (Ltd.) report as follows: — We submitted a very large catalogue at our stores to an unusually large attendance of buyers. Bidding brirfk throughout the sale, the lighter of hides being in most favour, and as our catalogue was composed mainly of this class we experienced a most satisfacj tor.y sale, with values ruling about id per lb in advance of late rates. For the heavier hides offered in our catalogue the demand was not so bright, but we made a satisfactory clearance of the whole entry. We quote : Prime stout heavy ox, 6d to 7i<l per lb ; good to heavy, s^d to s£d ; medium, 4£d to s^d ; light, 3£d to 4id; inferior. 2d to 2|d ; best heavy cow, 4jd to 4|d; medium, 3j£d to 4d; light, 3£d to 3|d;

I inferior, lid to 2£d; yearling, 2£d to 4£d; calfskins, 4^d to sd. Messrs Stronaeh, Morris, and 00. (Ltd.) report as follows: —We held our fortnightly sale of hides at our stores on Thursday, 20th' inst., when. we. offered a catalogue totalling 26*. The attendance of buyers was a large one, but competition was not keen, and prices all round were easier by lid to id on last sale. We had nothing of special merit forward, and our top price was b|d, paid for a medium-weight ox. In cow hides our top price" was 4id, which was paid for several lines of medium and heavy. The following are actual prices paid at our eale : — Prime stout heavy ox, none forward; good heavy, 5d to sgd ; medium-weight, 4d to 4Jd; extra good, to s|d; light-weight, 3|d to Hd; inferior, 2|d to 3£d; best heavy cow hides, 3|d to 4±d; light-weight, 3£d to 4-d; inferior, 2id to 3id : yearling, l£d to 3Jd ; calfskins, 3d to s|d. Messrs Wright, Stephenson, and Co., Ltd., report as follows: We held our usual fortnightly hide sale in our Madaggan street store on Thursday, 20th inst., when we offered a catalogue of 244 hides to an exceptionally large attendance of buyers. Bidding throughout our auction was very spirited, and out total catalogue, with the exception of two lots} was sold under" the hammer at prices which cannot fail to be satisfactory to the vendors interested. Prime, stout, heavy, ox, of which we had several lines forward, met with very keen competition, and sold at up to 7Jd per lb. All other sorts were in demand at a slight advance on late rates. Sheety, thin, and badly cured hides are neglected, unless at low figures. It may be of interest to quote a few of our individual sales : — Ox : five 731b, 7£d ; one , 981b. 7|d ; one 831b, Tid; one 721b, 7^d; two 651b, 7d ; one 641b, 7d; three 671b, 6|d; one 821b, 6|d; seven 651b, 6id; seven 611b, 6|d'; three 611b, 6d; seven 621b, 6d; one 601b, sld. Messrs Dalgety and Co. Teport as follow : We held our usual fortnightly sale of hides at our stores on Friday, when we submitted a large catalogue of ox and cow hides, horse hides, and calfskins. Buyers were in full attendance, and under spirited competition a clearance was effected at prices which ruled firm at last sale rates for heavy, medium, and light to id per Ib higher, whilst inferior descriptions showed an advance of from £d to Id per lb on last sale prices. We were fortunate in having passed a cumber of our offerings from last sale in the latter class. Our top price realised in ox hides was for bwo lines averaging- 641b and 651b respectively, which made 6j|d per lb. We quote: — Ox: Prime stout heavy, 6d to 7d; ordinary, 5d to 6d; sbeetv. 4d to sd ; medium heavy stout, 4id to s|d; medium light, 4d to 4£d; cow, heavy, 4d to 4£d ; light medium, 4d to to 4id; stag, 2£d to 3d; yearling, 2£d to 3£d ; calf skins, 4£d to s£d. Nearly all our hides were in, good condition, and every lot was sold under excellent competition, some of our cow hides, which were passed in at the previous auction, bringing Id more et yesterday's eale. The National Mortgage and Agency Company of New Zealand (Limited) reports having held their fortnightly sale of hides on Friday, when they offered a. catalogue totalling 345. The attendance of buyers was large, being the best for a considerable time. Competition was good, showing an improvement on the previous sale. Prices were, if anything, better than those ruling a fortnight ago. but as our catalogue consisted' of almost wholly medium quality, we have no high prices to record. With the exception of one lot of cow hides averaging 551b, which realised sid per lb. Quotation* : — Ox : Prime stout heavy, none offering; good, 5d to s|d; medium, 4d to 4gd; light, 3£d to 4id; slippy, lid to 2±d. Mesers Waters, Ritdiie, and Co. report haying held their usual fortnightly ?al< of hides at their stores. Crawford street, on Friday afternoon. There was a large attendance of buyers present, and competition was keen for all descriptions of dean, well-flayed lines, but faulty sorts had not the same attention, and met with a dragging sale. The quality of the abattoir hides was again very disappointing, ai large proportion being very sheety and showing little substance. We topped the market, securing B£d per lb, which was a farthing higher than obtained anywhere else. The following were some of our best returns:— Ox— l at 44e, 1 at 42s lid 1 at 41s 9d, 3 at 36s lOd, 1 at 36s sd, 1 at 35b 6d, 1 at 35s 3d, 1 at 34s 9d, 1 at 33s 4d. 1 at, 32s lid, 1 at 32s Bd, 1 at 32s Id. 6 at 30s lOd, lat 30s Bd. (Ltd.) report as follows : — We have sold privately at a very satisfactory price the whole of the well-known Ashlev Downs Romney Marsh stud flock, comprising 430 ewes anid 100 ram hoggets, to Messrs R. K. Smith, Tarras, and Harold Sfcudholme, GJenquoich Station, in equal proportions. The breeding ewes are in lamb to the imported stud ram Kent and to stud rams bred fey Messrs Bealey Bros. This flock

was founded by Mr James Gibson by the purchase of ewes from Captain' James Gardiner's famous Birchwood flock, and the sires used since were bred by the trustees ' of the Hon. James Fulton (flock Nq. 6), Messrs Bealey Bros (flock No. 9), an-d speci-ally-selected stud rams imported from England- Ma- Gibson's aim was always to breed up to a high standard, and in so doing constitution was kept to the front as-; the greatest of all points; then early maturity, symmetry, and a good, even fleece. As a consequence the Ashley Downs Romoeys have deservedly earned a great reputation for stamina, and, being eminently suited for crossing for hill purposes, the annual drafts of rams have always been eagerly sought after. They a>re also big- ; boned, strong sheep, well covered with a j dense, even fleece. The marked impress j the rams made on Mr Gibson's crossbred j flock may best be judged by the high prices -j invariably obtained for the Ashley Downs ! wool clip, and the large drafts of fat lambs annually turned off the estate. This market is very bare of good, young, sound horses of all e lapses. The supply lately has been far from equal to the demand, and we are confident that vendors would not be disappointed in the prices realised. Good, sound, young draughts suitable for town caiting are in special request, and we have numerous inquiries for sucb animals. Spring -carters and spring- v'anners ' are ' also wanted here, and we know of a number ofbuyers for sucih if young and upstanding, and' could place them to advantage.
