FIRE AT MATAURA.
GORE, April lb. Fire made another gap m the township of Mataura early this morning. Three business places m Bridge street were burnt. They stood opposite to those that were destroyed last week,. The fire started m the back part of Francis Thorn's bootmaker's shop — which had been used as a dwelling, but waa latterly unoccupied— and spread to T. F. Quilter's fruit and confectionery shop. These places were destroyed; also B; Downes's blacksmithy and implement works next door, containing a considerable amount of machinery Quilter's cordial factory, at the rear of his shop, was saved. Downes's shop was leased from J. Lot:* den. The fire is supposed to have been caused by a defective chimney. J. Lowden, sen. — Machinery and plant,' £150 m the Royal; buildings. £200 m the Royal. His loss above insurance is £309.. Downes's 6took, £100 m the United ; lose above that £60. Quilter— £loo m the South British on the stock and £200 m the Royal on the factory, which was saved. Hi< loss ibove insurance is £70. F. Thorn had no insurance ; his loss is £100. T. and J. Mac Gibbon, owners of the buildings tenanted by Thorn and Quilter, were insured for £150 m the National, and los** £150 above that sum.
