AUCKLAND RACES.
Fibst Day — Satubday, Apbil 18. The Auckland Racing Club's meetings opened at Ellerslie to-day under most favourable conditions. The weather was all that could be desired, the track was m good order, and there was a large attendance. The Governor and party were among those
present. The totalisator investments amounted to £14,999 10s, as compared with £15,056 10s for the first day last year. Seventeen bookmaker^ were licensed at a fee of £20 per day, and 10s per day for each clerk. Last year there was also £1700 odd invested en the double totalisator, whereas there was none this year. No bookmakers were present last ytar. The results are es follows : — TRADESMEN'S HANDICAP. One mile and a-quarier. Mr J. R. Roubton's Delegate, 8.6 (Ackroyd) 1 Hen. J. D. Ormond's Woodhey,- 7.6.' (Wilson) 2 Mr Gall's Lord Seaton, 7.2 . . . . 3 Also started: Scotty 3.10, Carl Rosa 8.9, Sweet Alice 8.5, Montigo 8.1, Syren 7.1, Stp.rina 6.13. Swset Alice caused a long delay zi the poat. From an even start Carl Ro-s3, Delegat?, and Scotiy were first to chow out, ond turning out of the straight Delegate was a length ahead of Sweet Alice, followed by Carl Rosa, Woodhey, and Ecotty. Wocdhey. Delegate, and Lord Seaton fought, out the finiah, Delegate winning by a neck, while Lord Seaton was three-quarters of a length behind Woodhey. Time, 2_cin llosc. BRIGHTON HURDLE RACE. Two miles. Mrs A. Hughes's Banana, 9.0 (Willi_.r_c) 1 Mr Baird's Dolores, 10.4 (Hickton) .. .. 2 Mr Douglas's Lady Hune, 10.10 (Howard) 3 Also started : Cuiragna 11.9, Hautapu 11.3, Le Beau 10.11, Gocd Faith 9.0, Omati 10.2. Omati was three lengths ahead at the first hurdle, with Hautapu next, and Lady Hune third. When the fourth obstacle was negotiated Omati. Hautapu, and Dolores wore together, but Dolores took command shortly afterwards, Ranana being second, and Lady Hune third. Shortly afterwards Ranana supplanted Dolores, and won by three lengths, while a similar distance separated second and third. Time, 3min 47 2-sse2. NORTHERN CHAMPION STAKES. Six furlongs. Mr E. J. Watt's Aborigine, 8.7 (D. Price) 1 Mrs Coombes's Master Soult, 8.10 (Julim) ■ 2 Mr Monk's Diabolo, 8.10 (Hatch) . . .3 Also started: Aimwell 8.10, Osgodby 8.10, Charteuse 8.8. From a good start Master Soult and Charteuse showed cut first, but at the cutting th* .latter fe3 away. Coming into the straight Aborigine had obtained the advantage, and coming away he won by two lengths. A neck separated second and third. Time, lmin 16 4-ssec. EASTER HANDICAP. One mile. Mr J. R, M'Donald's Gold Crest, 9.0 (Young) 1 Mr Revulsion's Veronica, 7.12 (Ackroyd) 2 Hon. J. D. Ormond's Dawn, 8.0 (Wilson) 3 Also started : Marguerite 9.4, Master Delaval 8.8, 'Uhlando 8.7, King Billy 8.6, Mahuta 8.5, Uranium 8.2, Soultline ,7.11, Celtic 7.9, Leonator 7.9, Te Aroha 7.5, Advocate 7.3, Rauparahak 7.1, Certainty 6.13, Lady Pohina 6.12. From' a good start Marguerite was the first to show out, with Lady Pohina and Gold Crest lying next. - At the six furlong post Soultline had gained a four-lengths' advantage, Lady Pcihina being next, followed by Gold Crest. Turning the bend Gold Crest mad© a splendid effort, and when entering the straight Soultline had enly a. length to the good. Gold Crest overhauled him gradually until a little over half-way up the stretch they were on terms. The field here closed up, and, after a great continued effort, Gold Crest was landed a winner by half a length, three-quarters separating second and third. Time, lmin 40sec. EDEN HANDICAP, Seven furlongs. Mr W. Davis's Maheno, 6.13 (Webster) .. 1 Mr M'Donald's Taitoko, 6.12 (Hatch) .. 2 Mr Irwin's Loch Buie, 7.8 (Ryan) ..3 Also started: Tui Cakabou 8.1, Landlock 7.8, Manapouri 7.7, Waihuka. 7.4. Maheno was the first to show out, with Taitoko next. This pair raced neck and neck all fche way, a sterling finish being witnessed. Hardly anything separated the pair nt the finisk. Loch Buie was thTee-<jVLa.rters of a length away. Time, lmdn 28 l-ssec. VICTORIA HANDICAP, Five furlongs. Mr J. Monk's Suffragette, 7.0 (Hatch) .. 1 Hon. J. D. Ormond's Diamond Star, 8.8 (Wilson) 2 Mr J. Lvnch's Jena 7.1 (Brown) .. •. 3 Also started: Rarat* 8.0, Talepiteher 7.12, Waimangu 7.8, Coromandel 7.5, Kimlock 6.12. After going some distance Diamond Star went to the front, with Gipsy Belle next. Suffragette then come out, and won easily by three lengths. Time, lmin 3 l-ssec. NELSON HANDICAP. Seven furlongs. Mr F. Stennings's Epsom Lass, 7.3 (Greenwood) 1 Mr Nasmith's Auldearn, 9.4 (Porter) 2 Mr M'Niccol's Mark Time (Ryan) . 3 Also started: Freemount 9.0, Royal Soult 8.F2, Cliochette 8.8, Aristocrat 8.7, First Gun 8.7, Cadence 8.6, Tui 8.5, Waiotahi 8.4, Baltimore 8.4, Cyrona 7.11, Lira 7.10, Eskamillo 7.7. Cadence showed out from the big field, Auldearn and Mark Time following close. Coming into the straight Auldearn was the first to show out, and then came Mark Time, with the others close up. At the distance Epsom Lass shot out, and defeated Auldearn by a head. Time, lmin 29 3-ssec. TRAMWAY HANDICAP, Five furlongs. Mr R. Hannon's Miss Winnie, 8.7 (Brady) 1 Mr Ring's Wauchope, 7.4 (Whitaker) .. 2 Mr Hodges's Notecrini, 7.10 (Hatch) .. 3 Also started: Black - and - gold 8.3, Tamainupo 8.2, Loongana 8.1, Guidwife 8.0, Finery 8.0, North Head 7.13, Marangai 7.6, Foremost 7.4, Kirsty 7.3, Frederick 7.2, Haldane 6.11, Waihoihoi 6.11. Miss Winnie soon got the lead, with Wauchope second. At the top of the course Haldane ran up third. Miss Winnie maintained her advantage, and won by a neck; a couple of lengths separating second and third. Time, lmin 2 2-ssec. Second Dat — Monday, Aphil 20. The Auckland Raoing Club's autumn meeting was continued to-day. There was a large attendance. Mr Cowie's The Gunner, 9.9 (Cconey) . . 1 Mr Hanley' s Honest Tom, 9.9 (Thistleton) 2 Mt Perry's Beaumont, 10.12 3 Also started: Teary 9.13, Derelict 9.8, Lady Seaward 9.7. The Gunner was badly left at the start, but : eventually got going, and fenced beautifully, catching the others and winning very easily. No time was taken. DISTRICT HACK RACE, Of 35sovs. Six furlongs. Mr W. Walker's br g Embrasure, 3yrs, 8.11 (Rae) 1 Mr Jameson's Musketator. 8.2 (Emerson) 2 Mr Hogan's Royal Shell, 10.7 (Byrne) .. 3 Also started : -. Glengarry 9.4, Hornet 8.7, Turrett 9.2. Turrett was left at the post. Embrasure beld command to the straight, where the field drew together, and a splendid finish resulted m Embrasure winning by half a length, a similar distance separating second and third. Mr Provan's blk m Offioe Girl, syrs, 9.3 (MTvor) 1 Mr Beck's Post-card, 7.12 (Byrne) .. .. 2 Post-card led for about half the distance, when Office Girl drew level, and the pair raced neck-and-neck to the straight. Office Girl then moved gradually away, and won by half a length. Time, 2min 2jsec. GREAT WESTERN STEEPLECHASE, Of lOOsovs. Three miles. Mr R. M'Kay's b g Albury, aged, 9.11 . 1 Mr Baird' s Cronje, 9.7 , 2 Mr O'Brien's Silver Ring, 10.10 ... 8 Also started : Manazona 11.12, *t. Kooringa 10.12, Kimua 10.10. At the end of two miles St. Kooringa and Kimua were out of it, and Cronje and Albury were leading, followed by Silver Ring and Manazona.
