STRATH-TAIERI AGRICULTURAL SHOW
The seventh annual show of the StrathTaieri A. and P. . Society, held on Monday, ' was attended by a larger number of visitors than on previous years, though entries iii the various classes showed a falling oil m consequence of the lateness of the daic for holding the show. The grounds have been greatly improved during the past- year, for no less than £1200 has been expended m erecting a suitable hall and offices. Tne main hall, m which th efarm, dairy, root, and exhibits of housewifely skill were shown, is a fine roomy apartment that will be provided with a stage and seating, and should prove a great advantage to thoso interested m the promotion of social gatherings at Middlemaroh. The capital has been subscribed locally by a company consisting of 925 shareholders of 20s per share. It is only fair to say that Mr W. Moynihan (president of the society) and Mr , R. Walker (the secretary), both of whom have held office ever 6ince the inception of the society, have used their personal influence m getting the hall erected. There -will be an official opening of the new hall by the Minister of Lands as soon as a convenient date can be arranged. The show, from an agricultural point -of view, may be pronounced a decided success, as showing the capabilities of the district. There were no less than 26 splendid exhibits of potatoes, free from disease of any kind, and remarkably well grown. Many of these came from the peaty soils under ranges 1800 ft above sea level, where frosts are almost unknown, and where crops of about 10 tons per acre can be relied on. Some very fine pumpkins — one 841 b weight — came from the district which has been regarded as the desert region of StrathTaieri. Messrs Murray, Roberts, and Co. figured conspicuously amongst the exhibitors and prize-takers, and m the hall they had a particularly fine bay of farm produce prepared on the famous Gladbrook Estate. This included jams and jellies m endlesa varieties, piokles and sauces, prepared by Miss M'Bride, that looked tempting enough to please an epicure. In the draught stock mares with foals at foot and the yearling's were considered by competent judges to be of excellent -quality. The two-year-olds were fair without being conspicuously meritorious. In the lighter classes the quality was medium. In sheep the Romneys exhibited by Mr Alex. Matheson found great favour m the judge's eye, and m the estimation of the farmers who critically examined the pens. The two-tooth wethers exhibited were excellent m quality. Pigs were few m number. The pens of fowls were also not numerous — an indication that poultry farming does not receive as much attention as it deserves. Messrs Hordern and White, of Dunedin, had an excellent display of buggies and gigs that excited a good deal of admiration, and there was a small display of agricultural implements. The _Middlemarch Brass Band, under the direction of Bandmaster Matheson, played at frequent intervals on the parade giround. In the evening there was a ball given that was largely attended. The Committee of Management and Mr R. Walker, the secretary, carried out the business arrangements m a very prompt and courteous manner. The following prizes were awarded : — CATTLE. Judge: Mr D.
