OTAGO EARLY SETTLERS' ASSOCIATION.
A committee meeting, held m the board room of the Early Settlers' Hall on Monday, 13th inst., was atßendei by Messrs'"* Dona.d Reid (m the chair), John Reid, Duke, Barton, Ferens, Biebner, Proudfoot (treasurer), Lcaglands (escretary), and Drs Fulton and Will. Votes of thanks were passed to Mrs Fulton, "West r»ieri, for framed portraits of her late father, Mr W. H. Valpy, and her late husband, ihe Hon. James Fulton, both passengers per Ajar, 1849; to Dr Fultot foor two glass eates and glass top tor frame, which will help to fill a much-felt want m the museum, also part of frame of wattle-and-dab house erected fox Captain Oargill m 1847, at the foot of Pitt street, but first iccupied by Dr Purdi* m 1849, pulled Sown by Dr Fulton last year, also a bill of lading for twenty-four packages agricultural implements and clothing, end two cart-wheels and axle shaped per Ajax m 1848 to the order of .Mi James Fulton, also a pencil sketch by the late Rojjert Fulton of Captain Young and first mate of the Ajax; to Miss M'Diarmid, Woodside, West Taieri, for framed oil painting of hei- iather, the late Francis M'Diarmid, "Woodside, passenger per Philip Laing, 1848, and for oil painting of her late mother, Mrs M'LTurmid ; to Mi Robert Meroer, for framed portrait of his father, the late Andrew Mercer, passenger per Philip Laing, IS4B, and of his mother the late Mrs Mercer; to Mrs A. M'MilLan, lattlebourne, for presentation of eaey oh-air for nee of the president; to Mra .Skinner, Eglinton road, for framed pictures — Waitahuna MaM«, th* residence of her lato husband (the Rev Mr Skinner) and herself, a shop m Waitahuna, MiltoA Pottery Works, Vwo views of Tapanui, one of Greenfield, and one of Larnach's Castle- to a friend for framed picture,' B&lclutba m 1868, _ showing many well-known residents and buildings of that period; to Mrs Higgin* for framed portrait of her mo-her, the late Mrc John Duff (Mr Duff arrived m the Slairw Castle, 1852), to a number of ladies for piesenting chairs for the hall, there beicg no seating accommodation ' at present : to Mrs Peart, passenger by the Strathallan, 1858, for her photo; to Mrs Margaret Ferens for a numbor of polished shark's teeth for the museum. The Secretary reported that a meeting of ladies bad been held for the purpose of forming a ladies' committee. Mrs Annie Livingston was elected president, Mesdames M'Donald, Barnes, and Peden vioe-presi-dente; Mrs W. H. Ferens aecretary and trwußirw. In aLcLdii.io.il to ©th-ear pTopo£&la, it was decided to hold a sale of work at summer show time, proceeds to go towards iuxnishing the hall. The Secretary reported that fh* »ixiy-esghth anniversary of the settlement of Waikouaiti and eighth year of celebration was held on the 13th March. The day being fine, and the local committee having made perfect arrangements, the celebration was a great success. One noticeable feature was the large number of pioneers present. This celebration is growing m favour each year. A vote of thanks wa* passed to the Caledonian Society, the Gaelic Society, the Burns Club, and the Pipe Band for their assistance on the occasion of the snniversary celebrations on March 23. There has been so much goodwill shown to the association m carrying out this celebration, and so many presents made, that it is impossible adequately to thank ali for their gifts, but the committee wishes to assure each and all that the feeling which prompted suoh kindness will be held m grateful remembrance. Thirty-eight new members were enrolled. The following deaths were recorded: — In the North Island, Hannah, relicft of the Rev. John M'Nicol, late of Waihola, Strathallan, 1868; Edward Perkins (68), Waikaka, I860; James Sim, North-East Valley, Alhaibbra, 1864; Robert Charter (60), Mosgiel), Bombay, 1862; Tames Adiam (88), Tokomairiro, Philip Laing, 1848; by cable on February 27, Janet, wife of Dr Cecil Yates Biss (aged 57), youngest daughter of the l*te John Jones, of > Waikouaiti. Mr Biss waa m the Post Office,
Dunedin, t*v the time of their marriage leaving for Home shortly after, wher^ qualified for the medical profession.
