TRAIN FATALITY.
MEMBER OF B BATTERY KILLED.
Sadness pervades Battery "B " owing tv the awful death of one of their comrades on the 16th inst. The troop train conveying the battery lefc Dunedin at 9.20, and when m the vicinity of Merton, Driver J. Logic, m passing from one carriage to the other, was seen by Sergt. -major West to disappear, and the train jolted horribly twice. At . Waikouaiti Lieut.-colonel Brigade Surgeon do Lautour went back down the line on » velocipede to render first aid if possible, while the ambulance followed by road. The unfortunate man was found cut to pieces. It is also stated that the body was run over by the engine and three" cartages of the following train before it could be stopped, but it seems certain that Driver Logic was killed by the train from which he fell. There had been a heavy fall of dew, the stanchions, hand rails, and platforms being slippery. More of tho remains were picked up m the morning. Driver Logic was very highly thought <-f by his officers and comrades. He worked m the Hillside Workshops, and was a single man, end lived with his parents. A verdict was returned "That the deceased came by his death by falling from the car of a railway train while travelling between Puketiraki and Merton, and being crushed by the train passing over him, and that he came by his death accidentally." . . -^ At the inquest the evidence went to show that deceased had not touched drink oil tho day he met his . death.
A squad of four men, m oharge ol Sergeant-major Miller, was detached froni B Battery at Goodwood on Saturday afternoon, with Lieutenant Roberts, to reprei sent the Battery at the funeral of Driver J. Logic. The. squad rejoined the Battery m camp the first thing next morning. The funeral yesterday afternoon was m respect of followers on foot one of the largest seen since the interment of Dr Stuart or Dr Moran. The cortege extended from Cargill road along King Edward street to Park terrace. Tlie Druids, of whom deceased was a member, attended m regalia, and preceded the hearse. The pall-bearera were the squad of artillerymen mentioned,* and the concourse which followed consisted of employees at Hillside and friends of the deceased and his family. The obsequies were conducted by the Rev. ' R. Mackie.
