OTAGO LAW SOCIETY.

At the annual meeting of the Otago Law Society the President read the annual report, which stated: — 1. The number of practitioners on the roll at 31et December last was 123, as against 114 on 31st Deoember, 1906. During the year nine gentlemen were admitted as solicitors and two as barristers and solicitors. The President brought before the meeting the question of advertising, and read a circular which had been issued by a country practitioner soliciting business. He also read resolutions which had been passed by the Wellington Law Society as follows : — • " (1) That the advertising by solicitors, either in the newspapers or by circular or otherwise, for the purpose of induoing the public to do business w^th bhe person advertising is a breach of etiquette. " (2) That advertisements (a) setting out the names of olient of the person advertising; or (b) purporting to chow any special advantages that the public are likely to obtain by taking applications for loans to the person advertising, are breaches of etiquette, but that it ie not objectionable for a so'ioltor to notify that he ha« money to lend on any particular class or classes of security or the rate of interest required — nor ie it objectionable to publish a notice in the case of a practitioner or firm changing his or their office, an-d in the case of a firm entering into partnership or dissolving partnership, or a card in the oa&e of a practitioner commencing to practise."
