Munro's Gully, Tuapeka.

TO THE EDITOB. Sir, — In a recent issue you ■ gave ail account of the golden wedding of Mr and Mrs Finlay Munro, and said that Munro's Gully was named after Mr P. Munro, who came to Otago in 1862. I think there is some mistake, and should very much like to know fuller particulars. I always understood that Munro's Gully was named after Mr George Munro, who was 'shepherding in the Tuapeka distriot for Messrs Musgrove and Murray as far back ac 1858. He crossed the first sheep over the Waitahuna River in that year. He was trten 33 years of age, go that now he would be 83 years old. He was there all through the first rush to Gabriel's in 1861 and long after. He paid a visit to the district- in March, 190S, and drove a flock of sheep over the Waitahuna River at the same ford where he had crossed the sheep 47 years previously. The Rev. A. B. Todd, Presbyterian minister stationed at Tokomairiro in 1861, wrote a ehort account of his visit to Gabriel's gold diggings. He reached Tuapeka on July 13, 1861, "and lodged that night in the shepherd's (Munro) house at the head of the ffuHy» on the other side of the spur. On Sabbath, July 14, I conducted divine service in the open air. Standing on a cart, I preached to about 700 people. ... A second service waa held: in the afternoon, with a smaller number in Munro's Gully." So the gully had that name in 1861. * Trusting that Mr F. Munro or some of your readers will set me right,-! «., etc. w & &
