LAND AND WATER.
The oounoil of the New Zealand Swim* ming Association* and the Canterbury Gentre have (says the Press) come to a disagreement over the liability for the deficit on. the Australasian championship meeting-, held in Christchuroh in February of last year. The matter was referred to at the meeting of the centre on Friday evening. ' It was stated that the centre undertook the management of the meeting after having ■ received verbal assurances from various individual members of the council that any deficit would be made good by the council. The meeting resulted in a loss of £53, but the oounoil declined to recognise any, liability. The centre, on making an application for the money, was requested to circularise clubs for contributions, and thi« was done. The result, however, waa entirely unsatisfactory, the eluba being sympathetic but unfinanoial. The council is now, it was stated, approaching the centre* through their delegates to the council. Strong exception was taken by Mr Walter Johnston to some remark* made at a oounoil meeting accusing the oenttfe of dilatorinese in tackling the position. Mr Johnston said that the centra had shown more energy than the council. . The commercial travellers of Dunedia and InveroargiU have tried conclusion*, in football and cricket at Batdutha. The latest proposal is a bowling contest, and this is likely to eventuate before long. SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS.
