LAKE COUNTY.

March 7.—The rain which commenced ou Bundey last continued at intervals throughout the district on Monday and Tuesday. The weather cleared up on Wednesday, since when it has been beautifully fine. Threshing was stopped for a few days, but the rain had a most beneficial effect on turnip and grass crops. .Bowling.—Owing fco the rain, the opening of the Arrow Club's green had to be postponed. The opening will now take place on the 25th inst. Entertainment.—-There was a large attendance at the entertainment given by the pupils of the Axrow District High School in the Athenteum Hall, Arrowtown, on Saturday evening last. The kinderspiel " Flowers o' the Forest" was staged for the second time. The performers again excelled themselves, and showed that they had received Jarful training at the hands of Miss Brown fend Mir Mehaffey. Mrs P. de la Perrelle acted as accompanist. At an interval, Mr P. de la Perrelle, chairman of the committee, returned thanks to the performers, and •the audience for their liberal patronage. Th* takings amounted to £14. Ministerial Visit.—Mx M. J. Gavin, Mayor of Queens town, has received a wire from Mr "W. Fraser, M.P., to the effect that Six Joseph Ward had> consented to include Queen stown in his Goldfields tour in a few weeks' time. Mr Fraser sent a further wire stating that as the Prime Minister would not return to Wellington till the 9th inst., it would probably be the 15th before he would leave on , lii? tour. Week-enders.—About 140 week-enders arrived in Queenstown on Saturday evening. A large number went to the Head of the Lake on Monday. Unfortunately for the tourists, the weather was wet on this occasion. Licensing.—The quarterly meeting of the Wak&tipu Licensing Committee was held at Queenstown on Tuesday last, the f-u 11 owing members being present:—Messrs F. J. Burgess, S.Si. (chairman), A. Ford, and P. de la Perrelle. Permanent transfers were granted as follows:—Mrs J. T. M'Bride, Family Hotel, Queenstown, to Mrs E. Roberts; executors of late W. Sachtler, Commercial Hotel, Pembroke, to J. A. Malcolm; executors of late Mrs Perriam, Welcome Home. Hotel, Lowburn. to M. L. Spratt. A temporary transfer of the license of Ballarat Hotel, Arrowtown, was granted from D. Richardson to R- J. Kelly. Mrs Jopp wag granted permission to carry on the Royal O»k Hotel, Arrowtown, until the 30th June. Regatta.—At a meeting of the interim Committee, held in Queenstown, the collectors who were appointed to see what support would be given to the proposal to hold a regatta at Queenstown, reported that they had received very good support from the business people and others. It was also stated that the Railway Department had proffered every assitance, and that oarsmen Irom. Otago and Southland had signified their intention of being present. It was decided to hold the regatta on the 18th April. A programme was drafted, the prize-money allotted—amounting to £63, the principal event being a senior four-oared outrigger race, for which the first prize is £10 and second £3. There is no doubt that the regatta will be a success, and it will be a most delightful trip for visiting oarsmen. Personal.—Mr A. Delargey, accountant in the Arrow branch of the Bank of N.Z.. has been granted three months' leave of absence on account of ill-health. Mr Nichols, of the Dunedin office, is taking Mr Delargey's place. The latter has proved himself a most otygiiilg officer, and bis many friends trust that his holiday will have beneficial effects. Mt K. Paton, son of Mr J. K. Paton, has joined the bank service, a-nd will be stationed at Arrowtown for a couple of months. .Property S*le.—On Saturday last Messrs Cotter Bros, held an auction sale at Arrowtown of the late Mr B. Walker's properties. The dwelling and ,sections in the main street ■were purchased by Mr A. Jopp. but the reserve for the sections on the Terrace was not reached, and they were passed in. "Mining.—The Moonlight Company, Moke Creek, reconstructed same time ago, has now completed its race, and is about to start sluicing operations. Two of the Gore diir-ec-tors visited the claim this week, and expressed themselves well satisfied with the ■progress made under the mangement of Mr O. Lynch. Mr T. O. Bishop has resigned managership of the Shotover Q.M. Company, and was accorded a send-off by the Skipper's residents last evening. Mr Bishop's successor is Mr M'Donald.
