In Abyssinia it is considered a crime to smoke. The law forbidding tobacco wm afrLrst intended 1 to prevent priests from smoking in church ; but it waa taken too ,literally, and nowadays even foreigners have to be careful not to be seen smoking. A number of litterateurs and musicians have been interviewed by a Paris periodical on the effect oJ alcohol as a stimulant td brace activity. viotorien Sardou say* he holds alcohol to be a poison. He never had reoour»e .to nioohol as ■» «*xm«ia.xit to do his work. Coffee he uses quite freely. Saiot-Saeos, the composer, drinks hfct^o alcohol, because of the bad effect on his liver. M. Massenet agrees with the others - that liquor is a bad maston.
