RIFLE SHOOTING.

THE TRENTHAM MEETING. TRENTHAM RIFLE RANGE, March 5. The seventh annual meeting of the New Zealand Defence Forces Rifle Association opened this morning. Entries had come in freely from all distriols, and when the men were squadded at the post it was found that records in the matter of entries had been easily surpassed. There were 504 : registered competitors up at the squadding post at 9 o'clock, where the triggers were tested by Major Hughes and Captain Foster. In order to bring their nfiee to the required pull several of the men had cut it rather fine, and three or four had to bo regulated. In the matter of eights, some irregularities were discovered, one rifle being fitted with a movable fore sight, and another with a match back sight. Colonel Collins addressed the competitors. After directing attention to the alterations , made m the programme since last year, he said the council had decided to make a team match straight out, with Volunteers and riflemen. In addition to the Hon. , Mr Gilmer's £20, the council would give j another £20, and Mr Peter Daweon had I offered a challenge shield for the winning team, while there would be a Lee-Enfield rifle for the highest individual score. Owing to the large number of entries the oouncil decided to put on a consolation matoh for all who bad not won £1 or over at the ; meeting. There would be £100 in prises, free ammunition, and free entry. Among , the visitors are two from the Common- ' wealth— Sergeant M'Calley and Sergeant Edwards — both of the highest calibre. The New Zealand champions at the meeting are ! Private Parslow 1899, Colonel Smith 1894, Cfeptain King 1899, G. Hyde 1902, H. J. King 1903, Sergeant Chin* 1904, Milroy ! 1905, Lieutenant Irvine 1906, and a large ' number of Bieley and Australian repreeenta- ! tires. The Colonial Ammunition Company ' has issued ammunition in special paokets containing eight and 11 rounds. The date , is 1904, and already 120,000 are in store. The shooting opened with the 200 Yards Volunteer and Rifle Clubs' Matches, fired concurrently. Although the weather had brightened up in the morning, sharp ! showers fell shortly after the first shot was fired^ at 10 o'olook. The^ showers continued at intervals during the day, making everybody extremely uncomfortable. The 200 yards shooting was meqioore. Three possibles were put up by Private Jackson, sen. (Wellington), C. Troneon (Ranfurly Rifles), and Rifleman Meyer (Hikurangi), , and there were only six 34's, Manson, Tay- | lor, Wilkie, Milner, and Bradley. The 600 yards was commenced shortly after 11, and the shooting was extremely poor. It was raining hard, and several men got only single figures. The veteran Jackson, however, put up 34, giving him a totai of 69 for the two ranges. The nex£ best total* were by Captain King (Ohrietohuroh), Duley (Dannevirke), and lerguson (Hunterville) 65, and a large number of 64'e and 63's. Great interest wae taken in the shooting of M'Calley and Edwards, but they made only 60 and 63. At 800 yards several of the leaders broke ~np, but Cameron put up 34, which gave Jiim a total of 95. Franklin (Weber) put up 30, and got a total of 96. j A feature of the match was the fine shooting by Bugler Soler, who put up 34 at 800. ! The following are the highest completed scores: — The firing at 200 yards of the Auckland MatoL was taken in the Tain, but the shooting was good, although there was only one possible, that By G. Hawthorn (Petone). There was a large number of 34's, and! ' 33's were even more numerous. . . . March 6. Trentham was in its absolutely worst mood to-day, and as a result there were several bursts. It would be difficult to imagine greater changes than ocourred in the weather during the day. The morning started with puffy wind, with a dirty light. Later there was a calm and bright light, but in a few minutes the wind puffed from the left and right, and consequently misses were ferquent. Shooting started at 7.45 a.m. with the 500 yds of the Auckland Match, and the ; conclusion of the 800 yds of the Volunteers and Rifle Clube' Match. In the latter the shooting is best described as patchy, crack after crack going to pieces. Still, there were some that held on, and among them Captain W. S. King, oi Linwood {ex-oham-pion), who, going- with heart, put up 31, which with his previous 65 puts him at the head of affaire. As marking the difficulties of the shooting, Soall^y and Edwards, of the Australian visitors, and among the first shots in the Cpmmopwealth, were so puzzled by the oonditione that they j made fiQ and 12. Among clubmen the same difficulty was felt, and nothing beat W. j IFrankliu's score made on the previous evening. An analysis of the highest 20 price-takers in each match shows the Volunteers to be the better,, averaging 91.6 per man, against 95. . During -the day the range was visited by i Col<wi«l Itptla. 0.8. r Surgeon major Purdio, Captam O'Sullivaa, and Lieui -colonel Hawkins, Canterbury. After" inspecting the range the three latter fired at the running man, Col." Hawkins winning by 3 points. j In the Auckland Match, which was continued, the scoring was poor at the 500 yds, the principal scores being H. Hawthorne and Drummond with 66. At the 600 yds wind came over the hill and again calcu- | lations were upset and scores were broken up. At the 800 yds range, where the Orago Match, 10 shots at -eaoh range, had 001amencedj, there was the same trouble, and misses were common. The prize lists in the three matches completed are: — RIFLE CLUBS' MATCH, 200, 600, and 800 yards; seven shots. W. Franklin (Weber), £5 -.7 96 Cameron (Opaki), £4 »5 C. Those who knew the range well predicted ' it would be as bad as yesterday, and events J proved them to be right. Competitors mus- ! tered at half-past 7, half being marched ; to complete the Otago Match and ! the other to the 500 yds range to ' commence the Nelson Match. Those ', who were seleoted for the shorter j distance oonaiddred themselves lucky, for , there wae always the chance that the j weather would improve, but it ooulo! hardly j be worse.
