TROUBLE IN. CHRISTCHUICH. CHRISTCHURCH, January 9. Something of a disturbance took place it Cathedra! square to:night, resulting in tni arrest of two men. One of them is a seaman from H.M.S. Pyramus, ' who is charged with being; drunk while in charge of a hor3e and trap, and for driving in a reckless and dangerous manner, ancT the other is a civilian who" ie* charged with inciting the -crowd to resist the' police. The trap contained three seamen, who , were more or less intoxicated. They had been careering through the city throughout the early evening,, and many collisions were , narrowly- avoided. The. vehicle was at last stopped by the police- in Cathedral square, and the occupants- ordered -to get r out. They refused. A struggle followed and l a t large crowd immediately congregated, many.^ of the people siding with the men and hoot — ing the police. In -the generaLmelce, -two of- the three men " got away, but the- third ■ f was captured together with a young man,* who had been taking an active part in tho hostile ■ demonstration. The crowd fol- j lowed the- constables and the prisoners to; the police station hooting the police andl cheering the navy.
