A FATAL STAMPEDE
♦ LONDON, January 12. In a stampede of children from a cinematograph matinee in Harvey Hall, Baraslcy, Yorkshire, 16 were killed and 40 injured. Ai Barnsley the children were admitted to the gallery for a penny apiece, many of them being only four or five years of °For 400 seats 600 were passed in, while 400 more were on the long winding stairs. An attendant suggested the transfer of the surplus to the pit, and a rush ensued.Those hurrying downstairs overwhelmed those ascending, till there was a mass of human beings wedged into a small space at the foot of 'the stairs. There were heartrending scenes in the hall of the mortuary when the mothers were identifying their children. January 13.
