The sports held at Milton on New Year's i Day, under the auspices of the Tokomairiro Harrier and Ama/teui Athletic Club, were attended with most , gratifying success. The weather was very favourable for such an outdoor gathering, > and the attendance waa larger on the first year of the club'e existence. There were 155 entries for the various events — 50 more than at the previous gathering, — and there were 58 contestants. Under these conditions a large number of ■spectators were naturally attracted to the conveniently-situated 1 Farmeiß* Club's Grounds, and the gate money totalled' £21 10s, or £5 more than last year. The officials were oommendably courteous and businesslike in their arrangements, consequently , there were no tiresome waits between the -various events. A conting'eiit-from the Dunedin Pipe Band, .under Pipe-major M'Callum, -played at frequent intervals daring the day. The running track was a trifle rough in parts, consequently there were a couple of tumbles, but not serious ones. The fpllowing are the results : — Hurdles, 120 yds. —Th« first heat waa won by R. F. Mitahell in 19 8-saec; in tho second heat T. R. Overton had a walk-over; and the third was won by E. Shedd'a/n in 18 4-ssec. BRIGHTON., The Brighton Caledonian Sooietv held its annual sports on New Year's Day, when there was a very larpe attendance" of visitors from both town and country, drawn together by the splendid weather which has of late been prevalent. By thie means Otago's ohief watering-place was thronged. The people .assembled to see/mnd "meet; friende s ;' neighbours .,' wfiom, perhaps, they had not seen^sjnoe last jNew Year's Day. , .It was very, .^hterentinjr to hear two or tnree of the{ old Brighton settlers talking of their early days in 'the neighbourhood, and . <k>mnarinjr the .Brighton, of 40, years -ago' ( witht-the Brighton of to-day, -and* tfalkinjr of the change that jwill be when the mijeh-talkfin-of ra.ilw.av fa <p*ut % ,ihroiieh. wJiidi they, aro ; yery confident • of -seeing in -the .not ;verr distant future. The domain t known as "The Plat" prensnted a-very 'animated appearance all 'day. Small camps •of visitors wer© dotted here and there, everyone trying to gat the greatest amount of pleasure out of the i shortest span of time. There was some i little trrumbling by -some at having to Day for admission,, but. those .who^ expect to have a I clay's pleasure for nothing should think of the pleasure they give to others by rendering ar little assistance on an occasion }ifce i>his. A number of local pipers were . A&rvo^ and enlivened the

[ with their music, and gavo to the gathering I a real Caledonian ' torie. There were one lor two regrettable incidents during the • day. By one of these a horse belonging to Mr Armstrong, of the Dunedin Abattoirs, | got his leg broken and had to be shot. It I was being 1 exercised in view of taking part in the Polo Race, and somehow came down, with the above .result. The rider escaped -unhurt". The other 'case was a collision \ by two traps at the bluff above the boat ! harbour. It appears one of them going } towards Brighton cake round the corner ..rather quickly and met the other approachj ing- the turn. Neither could steer- clear, • with the result that the occupants— a lady ' and a gentleman — in the one going towards j Brighton were thrown out and were somej, what hurt and shaken. One of the horsea ('then bolted towards Green Island, a,nd on I reaching the bottom of the hill 'at the i rocks -collided with another trap, breaking .a. shaft and harness' and causing a general smash-up. An excellent programme was ' presented, and some of the items were well j contested, especially the ladies' races, in • one of which a competitor fell and the one behind showed her agility by leaping [.over her and coming in third in the race. ! At the close of the proceedings the president, Mr M. Stevenson, thanked, the people r for their presence and the donors of prizes for their gifts, special mention being made of Mr- Alexander' Cameron for his gift of a box of tea to the winner of the Married Ladies' Race. The press was also thanked i for its courtesy and kindness in publishj. ing Brighton news and views on all matters affecting the district.
