Th© industrial -wheels have been set in motion once again, the coal mines and sawmills resuming operations, as also the various gold: mines and dredges. For coal and timber <3iere is an excellent demand at present, and the .prospects for the ensuing year ar,e very bright. As to the coal trade, it is confidently expected that the export this -year will constitute a record for this port.
During the past fortnight no less than seven race meetings, extending over 13 days, have ,been held on the West Coast. Witb one exception fine weather was experienced. The meetings were well attended, ~ while speculation was brisk, it being estimated that about £40,000 went through the totaiisator alone.
As to athletic gatherings, they numbered eight, extending over nine days. Here, again, the publio attended in large numbers. Takon on the whole, the West Coast carnival just concluded has been one of the mo3t successful yet held.
