SINGULAR DEATH.
1 BLENHEIM, December 11. Mrs C. H. Knowles, aged 30 years, the wife of a Wairau Valley storekeeper, died unexpectedly at the doctor's residence in town. A few days ago she was chopping wood, when a splinter entered her eye. Frequent surgical operations were performed without anaesthetics, but failed to give relief, and the woman was much exhausted by the pain. She wae, however, - able to communicate with her husband across the telephone this afternoon, afterwards undergoing another operation, during which she died in the chair from heart
