PENINSULA SHOW.

The thirtieth annual show of the Otaj?o Peninsula A. and P. Sooietv was liekl on thte society's show grounds at Portobello on Saturday. Residents and settlers on the Peninsula always patronise this show, and "the attendance, combined with numer- i ou« visitors from Dunedin, Port Chalmers, j and surrounding districts, was up to ths , standard of former years. The whole arrangements for the show, exoepfr the cramped accommodation provided for the secretary and press representatives, wore excellent. The president, secretary, and . othar officials, and particularly the class ' steward 0 , worked energetically all day. and by their efforts in the judj?incr vmp«= made the -work of the judges easy and pleasant. The v.ealher, although at times undecided

and threatening, held up well all dsy, an,3 visitors found ample to engage their attend tion in viewing and discussing {he merits of exhibits, listening to the excellent nraslq of the Port Chalmers Brass Band, and watching side-shows provided by private individuals who had wares for sale and wena derful information to impart in regard tj( the excellence of what they wished to d£s« pose of. The society adheres to 'its eiceUenf sygj tern of judging in Tings, -a system whicßt could with considerable advantage ba adopted by other societies. The rings, &>uaj in .number, are roped-in enclosures, intcj which each of the oJaaaes of stock — horses* cattle, etc. — are brought for judging, and the public are apprised of the fact thai a particular class is to be judged by one on the stewards calling out the fact and ringing a bell. The public have thus an .opportunity of looking on. while the awards of thj& judges are being mode, and as judging ie| going on in four rings at the same time ifchel x judging is got over in good time. As tq usual at the Peninsula Show, which is repre* sentative of a dairying district cattle oon* etituted a large nropcrtion of Saturday's exhibits, Alderneys, Jerseys, and JLjrrahrrea being in strong evidence. Small-framecl cattle of good milking strains *re specially suitable for the Peninsula, and speoial attention has consequently been given to> Ayrshire and Jeraej -steak, which under! careful' breeding and judicious crossing ere a feature -of dairying in this -part of Otagtt* In the Alderneys or Jersey clam Mr F. Hell* ■ - yer, with good exhibits from his weLWtnowa | herd, carried off the bdk of the awards. j Five or six very igood well-bred cows weva shown in this class, but a number of tha other animals were not m the usual food show condition. IPbe ohampion bull *ncl cow were splendid animal*, and a dry coir shown by Mr W. Geary was only .a little-be-hind the champion. A two-year-old heifer, shown by Mr Hellyer gives promise, when shown in milk, of being *n animal hard to beat. The half-hreds were a lair Tot, bud several of the exhibits were sot in candid tion. Mr J. S. Shaw., who secured most honours, showed a number -of excellent littla cattle. Ayishirea throughout 'were a good? class, and there was close competition hefc tween Mr A. M'GaSe *nd Hall Bros., a<n<j some good *n«n*l« were shown by Messrs ' D. Hughes and J. Dick, the former securing the championship for hia bull, and -Mil M'Cabe being awarded* champioir* certificate for & splendid cow. Mr Geary *nd Halß Bros, were the principal price-takers in hallbred Ayrehiree, some of the animals shown being excellent exhibits of a-iiardy and profitable -cross, the yearling -heifer -shown "bY Mr Glearwater being a. very promising) youngster. Shorthorns, on the whole, wera not a strong class numerically nor in quality-, most of the exhibits toeing out of -oondf* tion. In this class Mr J. Bacon «ecureai first for an aged bull, «nd Mr J. S. Shawi exhibited come promising heifers in the purebreds and a couple of 'good .'balf-hawS cows. Draught horses were -a good service-> able 'lot, the Clydesdale stallion "Yonngi j Prince Albert" securing first and -chant . • pion. The brood jnarea and tik>ee-yeair-013 fillies, and also the -two-year-old "fillies, vmca urt to th» standard of former shows, whiia . the yearling filly exhibited by Mr "WV liou^i, wmch carried off first and eham* pion, gave every indication of «Jevelopiit{ij into a high-class mare. Saabs were numsrous, and varied considerably. The judges I in this class had some bastction in «>m* ing to a decision as to "first .and second awards for a roadster stallion, ultimately giving their verdict in iavoyr of M* W« ; C. Hodgidnson's exhibit. The brood roccrec* particularly the mare shown by Messrs) Brown and Neill, -were good exbrihHs, «m£l the fillies and colts were « promising krtfc Geldings and wewhrfHanrrying hacks wertf also good as-a whole, and buggy "horses anfß ladies' hades were good rings. Sheep wera conspicuous iby >their abaence, only one pent of five lat Border-Leicester lambs being shown. Bogs, pigs, and poultry were Jnott large classes, and dairy produce exhibits* owing to the absence of a well-known butter 1 , exhibitor, were not so prominent as in for-* mer years. Mis Lewis «ecured mest point* in batter, and Mrs McCartney was equals successful in home-baking exhibits, and md exhibit* of locally-grown potatoes and ex* hibits of roll baoon and ham were excel* lent.
