AN INTERESTING POSITION.

The Leeds Budget recently published Witness Problem 2515 (by J. A. Boreham), and fLve play for a White win, correcting Mr orehani. The correction had in the meantime been published here. During a lonfc career the instances of error on Mr Boreham'e part are very rare, and in this case he was, as Mr F. Dunne says below, thinking of the position on the diagram, which he explained to us afterwards. In Problem 2515 the White King is on 18 »nd Black King on 17. The following appeared in the Budget, ' by Mt Dunne, and needs no further explanation: —

[Black.]

[Width.]

Black to play and draw,

The above is a companion to the end-gam* we gave last week, and is, we think, the position Mr Boreham had in view when h« published that ending as a draw. These twe endings are of very frequent occurrence in play, and might be included among th« " Standard Positions." advocated by Mr H. F. Shearer. Bpth are well-known to the experts as "old-timers," but we are not aware who was the original author of either. Fow lowing -is the play to draw: —

And no* sither 23 19 or 31 26 will draw; but beware of 81 27, which loses by 30 26, 23 30, 32 23, 21 25, 14 IT, 25 29, 17 21, 29 25, 23 18, W. wins. (a) 14 9 loses, same as the ending given last week.
