MIDDLEMARCH.
December 16.— About Jwo months, ago the farmers' prospects were not very promising. There was then every indication of another dry season. Now, however, farmers look forward: to having a good grain-crop, and with high prices they should be on good terms with themselves. The turnip crop also appears to be doing well. At time of writing (Monday afternoon) there is a steady rain falling, which will still further improve the appearance of the district, which, I think, .looks better than daces on the south line. Improvements.— Mr James Robertson has the local hall well under way. A concert and dance is to be held in it on Boxing Night, and when completed I "understand the Hon. R. M'Nab is to take part in the opening ceremony. Mr Robertson has also in hand a large dwellinghouse in the township for Mr J. Horn. The Sanatorium Question.— Residents are considerably relieved to know that there is now no likelihood of a sanatorium being established in the township, as the Salvation Army has purchased* the property of the late Mr J. M. Gillies. It is understood the premises will be used as a home for girls. Wandering Cattle. — Several residents were fined at the sitting of the magistrate's court for allowing cattle to wander on the street lines, but it does not seem to have had much effect in keeping stray cattle off the roads. It is something approaching a farce for the Taieri County to expect anyone residing 40 miles from here to put down the straycattle nuisance in this district. Probably when a serious accident occurs then' the county will appoint a local resident.
