KAIKOURA.

December 11.— On Friday evening the K.M.R. tendered a 'farewell social tv Miss M'Lauchlan, in recognition of her past assistance in furthering the interests of the corps during her long residence in the Kaikoura. In the course of a speech, Captain Allison told of the great lack of interest manifested by the young men of the district in the corps, and pointed out that the nwst important branch of their work — vie., shooting — was absolutely neglected. If the young men did not learn U> shoot, they would only be an encumbrance if ever they were forced to repel an attack from an enemy. He said that, with few exceptions, ladies took very little interest in Volunteering, though the first lady in the land (Lady Plunket) thought it worth while to set them a good example, which would very soon bear fruit. No branch of sport could do without the support of the ladies, and he hoped that many more 1 would follow the example of the guest of the evening, Mis» M'Lauchlan, who had done a lot of good work for tie corps. On behalf of its members, he had* much pleasure in presenting her with a token of their good wishes. He then hancted to Miaa M'Louchlan amidst loud applause, a silver afternoon tea service. Captain Allison then asked Sergeant J 0. Miiauobhra, who had recently joined the ranks of the benedicts, to accept a silvermounted walking-stick, as a slight appreciation of the good work he had done for the corps in the past. The handsome Binmey Oup, which was recently fired for^was presented to the first winner, Sergeant H. Flower, amidst loud applause. The conditions of the Binney Cup are that it has to •be woa- twice consecutively or three times at intervals. Scholastic— The School Committee has received a cheque for £2 5s from Mr A. W.
