EXPORT DEPOULTRY.

(Faoft Otjb Owh Cobkxspondest.) AUCKLAND, December 13. Mr D. D. Hyde, chief Governmenl poultry expert, who has been visiting" Auckland during the last few days on matters in connection with the industry, was interviewed by a Star representative yesterday, morning Mr Hyde saya that tho poultryindustry is making remarkable progress throughout tho Dominion, but in no place has there been such a- marked advance as in» the Auckland province. Auckland is the largesr exporting centre, and the quantity, Of eggs put through the local Gorerameirt grading last year amounted to aboufc 14 million — just treble the output' of any, other province. As further demonstraj< tion of the progress of the northern province in thia respect Mr Hyde quoted figures to 6how "that during tho period from April to October in the present year 1,369,310 eggs were put through the Auckland depot, as compared with 263.866 egg* for the corresponding period in 1906. Mr, Hyde added that it was reasonable to anticipate that by the end of the season, in March next. £i million eggs would have passed through the Auckland Government; Grading Depot. Tho process which Mr Hyde has long advocated of placing eggs incold storage during the flush of the seasonMid thus preventing a glut on the market when egge are most plentiful, has thoroughly caught on. Many thousands ofi eggs are at present in the freezing chambers in different centres, and the result should be to seoure & more even market': all the year round. In the Auckland freezing stores there ere at present heri 1 ] eggs which have been kept for two ye*r*j and a-half, and they are perfectly eweet andJJ wholesome. Experiments have prove*?,* however, that duck eggs cannot be success-, fully stored. "At all the experimental l stations," says Mr Hyde, ' the recent hatching season has been a reccrd success. Aft Blenheim the additions have been such that/ the caret&kers are almost at a loss to know what to do with the young birds. Orders are rapidly coming in, however,, from all 1 parts for young stock. At Ryakura experimental farm the experiments were particularly successful, and the demand for eggs and birds, which it 'was difficult to cope with previously, will be more easily met after January." Mr Hyde leave* for Wellington to-morrow, but returns ta Auckland the first week in February, when he will make an extensive tour of the province lecturing and making vteits of inspection in the various centres.
