ALLEGED TIMBER RING.

AUCKLAND, December 11,

At the meeting of the Auckland Trade* Labour Council this evening the following resolution by the Auckland branch of the Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and Joiners was endorsed: — "That this union urge upon the Government the .lecessity of placing a prohibitive duty on all kauri -timber exported from the Dominion..'" In the course of the discussion on the subject one speaker stated that there was at combination in New Zealand to force up thei price of timber. Another speaker considered 1 that the exportation of timber from Newi Zealand should bo prohibited altogether. December 12.

Interviewed to-day by a Herald reporter' in regard to tho statement made at last night's inoeting of the Trades and Labour Council as to the* increased price of kauri timber, Mr D. Goldie said: "The increases upon rough timber in no case, so far as B know, exceeds 2s per 100 ft." He said that in regard to the statement that ordinary building timber was 20s per 100 ft that, M this was subject to a discount of 10 per cent* in the case of builders, the actual price paid? to the miller was 18s. He said thajfc ovjtagt to its susceptibility to fire the kauri must^ go, and if the Government was anxious to provide cheap timber it should .reduce thei import duty or let it in free.
