WEST COAST OIL FIELDS.
(From Oub, O>wk CoHKESPOHDEarr.) GREYMOUTH, December IK. Boring, for oil at Kotuku is kept going aff steadily as has been the case for the past couple of yens, "but progress will be can* sidered slow by all who have no experieno# in boring for oil. The indications still re» main excellent. <The boring tools are down amongst slate, which is usually olo&e to th4f oil deposit, and is always regarded as an? unerring indication. The bore is constantly) sending up no end of gas, which is alscj another indication of the proximity of oi7, The bore-hole has not yet reached tlift thousand feet - level, and the exact depta at which oil in quantity may Be looked MB is, of course, pure speculation. Some of the bores in Canada and the United States run to between 9000 ft and 3000 ft. In at least one instance a bore has been put down 5000f? # and still no oil.
