"THE JUDGEMENT OF PARIS."
Some £v» or six. months asro Mr G- A. Perry, of thus city, discovered that among his mother's possessions was a pictyre -of apparently great age and considerable value. The subject was "The Judgment of Paris," and in order to set the question of ite author" ship and value at rest Mr Perry sent it to the- Home Country for the purpose of getting an opinion passed upon the work by London experts. It was surmised that these experts would fail to identify the picture, and this idea, is borne out by the following information supplied by the owner. Mr Perry writes : — " No. 1 failed to identify it, but considered it a sixteenth century work. No. 2 considered it a fifteenth century painting, probably a copy of Rottenhaumer's (Munich, 1564) work. No. 3 wrote me as follows: — 'It may interest you to know that in the Louvre, Paris, hangs & large painting of the same subject iy Antoine Zucchi (1726), identical in every respect (awe excepted) witfi your panel, tb« figures of which I much prefer to Zucchi's. As a collector of antiques and works of art, I am not surprised to learn that its identity is not established, chiefly on account of its greaii age and the severe cleaning it has undergone at some time. Nevertheless you have a valuable and magnrScent example of classical art, undoubtedly the work of a> master hand.' The picture reaches Dunedin shortly, and I am considering the advisability of accepting a tempting offer I have had for it, or to hand it to the Art Gallery Trustees for safe custody, aeeqnftr ing to more than one request I have ha/ to do so."
