The Sydney University Rugby Football Club has invited the New Zealand Universities to send a team over to Sydney next year for the purpose of continuing the intercolonial universities matches. The invitation was despatched nearly two months ago, but so far no reply has been received. The proposal is for the combined universities to take up the match instead of Otago University.
Two New Zealanders were seen amongst the forwards of the Colours team in the Cambridge Freshmen's match, played on October 17. They were G. M. Chapman (who is a Caius student) and C. H. Ritchie (who is studying at St. John's). The match ended in a draw, a goal and a try being scored by each side. Colin Gilray, the latest New Zealand Rhodes scholar to take up his residence at Oxford, was given a trial in the Freshmen's match, which took place on October 16. The weather wae beastly, and on the slippery turf few of the players could do themselves justice. Gilray, however, justified his inclusion in the White side by scoring an unconverted try in the first half and giving his side a three-point lead at half-time. In the second spell the New Zealander seldom, got a chance of handling the ball, and being well marked also played an inconspicuous part in a scrambling game. The Whites beat the Colours by 8 points to 3.
