MATCH AGAINST AN AUSTRALIAN ELEVEN.
BRISBANE, December 6.
The cricket match England v. an Eleven of Australia was commenced to-day. The weather was good, and the attendance was fair. The wicket was in good order.
Hobbs, Barnes, and Jones stood out of the Englifeh team. M'Alister won the toee from Fane, and sent Hartigan and M'Cartney to the wickets, Feilder and Blythe bowling. The score slowly mounted to 33, when Hartigan drove a ball back to Braund, ■who iad lelieved Blythe, and retired. Tarrant came in, and hit Braund for a couple, but then tapped him high to leg and was caught by Humphries. M'Alister iJUIed the vacancy. M'Cartney by good cricket knocked up 42, •when he drove Braund back and -was caught by the bowler. Annfitron^ hit Braund for 6^
I and was then stumped by Humphries. At ! the luncheon adjournment four wickets were down for 92. Rons continued to ; come slowly. The first century was hoisted ; by M'Alister cutting Fielder for 4 after an 1 hour -and three-quarters' play. M'Alister . and Gregory saw the total to 137, when I the latter went across to Blythe, who was I bowling in place of Crawford, and was j out Ibw. Redgrave joined M'Alister, and | the pair added 26 runa. M'Alieter then ; hit Braund up to Fielder at mid-off and Tetired. Hayes joined Redgrave, and the scoring became brisk. Redgrave went for the bowling, and the second century was hoisted as the result of two hours' play. Redgrave passed M'Alister's score amid applause, but shortly afterwards he came before Fielder and was bowled, after i having hit up 66 in 47 minutes. Cotter and Hayes settled down. Cotter quickly i ran into the twenties, and then touched i Fielder to Braund in the slips. The J catch was taken, but "No ball" was , called, and the wicket was 6aved. An j adjournment followed, and on resuming Cotter lifted Braund over the fence for 6. He placed the next ball in Crawford's hands at deep-on, however. At this stag© eight wickets were down for 279. ! Evans then came, and 10 runs were added. | Evans then went for a short run, and | Hayes was run out. Saundere, the last i man, made a single, -after which he was caught by Rhodes, and the innings closed for 299. Young and Fane went in for England, Cotter bowling to Young. The first halfhour produced 30. When the total stood at 24 Fane ran for a short drive, and Young, who hesitated, was nearly run out. Run-getting was not brisk After the half-century was passed Fane was caught by Tarrant. Humphries joined young, and the pair played out time. December 7. The cricket match between the English ! team and an Australian Eleven was resumed to-day in very sultry weather. , There was a large attendance, and the wicket was in good condition. Young and Humphries, the not-outs of the previous day, took their places at the wickets. The former received two balls from Armstrong which he was unable to play, and in coming across to the next Ihe was out leg before. The- partnership between Hayes and Humphries was brief, Humphries being out Ibw to Armstrong with only a eingle to his credit. Hutchings brought up the century by hooking Armstrong for 4. Immediately afterwards Hayes skied Saucers, and Hartigan took a good catch- Macartney then relieved Saunders with the ball, and Cotter went on at Armstrong's end. At 129 Hardstaff faced Macartney, who clean bowled him. Soon after Hurtchings had passed hk half-century he was missed by Evans, and to- celebrate the life he knocked 20 off Cotter' 6 over. This brought on Redgrave in Cotter's place at 149. At the luncheon adjournment fiv© wickets were down for 160. On the resumption of play the weather became threatening, a storm rising from the w*st. A dozen runs had been added when Braund attempted a short run, and Hutchings was run out. Shortly after this Braund was clean bowfcd by Macartney for 17. Rain then began to fall lightly, and the umpires conferred, but decided that play should proceed. A few minrrtes later Rhodes was clean bowled by Macartney. Bain then fell heavily, and stopped the game for an hour. When play was Tesumed the total was carried to 205, when Blythe tipped Macartney to M'Alister in the slips and retired. Fielder, the last man, with Crawford, 6aw the total to 223, when the latter was dismissed by Saundere, who held a fine catch at deep mid-on. The Australian Eleven began their j second innings by sending in Hartigan and I C4regory. The- former got 7 off Fielder, j but Gregory then touched the latter up, i and Braund accepted the offer. Tarrant I made 3, and was then caught behind the j wickets. M'Alister and HartigarT then j came together, and by solid cricket, and I despite numerous changes of bowling, passed the first century. BRISBANE, December 9. It has been raining all the morning, and the wicket is so soft that there will be no play before 2 o'clock, when the umpires are to again inspect the ground. The match has been abandoned.
