A better day for the competition could not have been desired, there being a total absence of wind, and the road on the course was in very good order, though on some parts of the Dunedin-Waitati road it is in a pretty rough condition, notably just after stu mounting the junction hill. Mr H. V. Fulton ably controlled the arrangements of the triale, and \va6 assisted by an energetio body of officials. To minimise the risk of accident, and conserve the interests of other upers of the road, stewards with flags wero stationed at intervals on the track, and everything pa--feod off without a hitch, save for the* inevitable few punctures, one rider getting half a horseshoe right into his motor cycle tyre.

A-^embling at the Saratoga Hotel, afternoon tea \\a& partaken of. and then tLe (drs and motcr cycles, to the number of about 24, made back to the starting post, the motor cycles being sent off first.

The cars and motor cycles being mostly of ihtFeiing horse-power and weight, and in tho case of the former carrying but two passenpers up 'to fhe or six, the task of arranging a handicap to place the machine* on somefhing liko an equitable basis, was undertaken by Mr K. E. Stark, the weight of tl.o machine, weight of passengers, number of cylinders, power of the engine, and time rakon to traverse the distance being taken info consideration.
