TE ORANGA HOME.
PUNISHMENTS CONDEMNED.
AUCKLAND, December 6. At a meeting of the Women's Political League last evening, Mrs Kirkby preside ing, a lengthy discnaeion took place on the recent occurrence at Te Oranga Home. The following resolution was- carried:—^This meeting of women strongly protests against the punishments recently inflicted at Te Oranga Home, and regrets ' that the Minister of Education gave his sanction to such' extreme "measures ; also that, in consequence of the widespread indignation aroused by the occurrence, the Minister be urged to alter the regulations affecting industrial homes as follows:— (1) That no boy "or girl over 16 years of age shall be subjected tocorporal punishment, that being a barbarous and degrading system ; (2) that the cutting of girls' hair as a punishment be abolished entirely; (3) that any method, substituted for the above, such as solitary ' confinement, etc., shall not be more severe than, that inflicted in the prisons for breaches of discipline; (4) that a better system of classification be inaugurated, and strictly observed."
