Miss Manson (England) is staying with Mrs M/Cloakey, Hull street. Mrs B. Seth-Smith. was in town for » day or two, and is now at Maheno. We are looking forward, very much to " The Guvnor," which will be played by our locaO. amateurs on show nights in the Opera House. I believe the booking is very brisk, and as the proceeds are in aid of the Town Hall iunds the house should be a crowded one. Some fearful and wonderful portraits of Freddy are appearing in the shop windows, and as our amateurs are reallj* excellent players, I hope their venture will be entirely successful. Mr G«orge Schacht gave a very successful , invitation concert on Friday night in Wear Street Hall. His pupils — violin and pia.no — acquitted themselves very well, and it was worth attending only to hear the rendering by Messrs The©. Sclwtcht and; M'Fie of De Beriot's " Fifth Concerto, which w«a simply delightful. Mr MPGibbon • sang " Absent " aid " I fear no foe " splendidly, and Mrs Batson received imperative recalls for her songs, "Primroses" and. "I dreamed a 'dream." Everyone here ia suffering a decided reaction after the rush of gaieties during race week All the strangers have departed from town, most of them to enjoy decidedly the best, part of existence — country life. During last week some most enjoyable afternoon teas were given, the first being that given 011 Tuesday far the members of the Shakespeare Club by Mrs Wilding, Opawa. Some of the members read a scene from a Shakespearean play, amongst those faking part being Mesdames Harper, Wood, BevanBrown, Nancarrow, and Miss Pugh and Hiss Moreland. During the afternoon Mrs Burns sang, and M*» Wilding played the piano, both items being much enjoyed. Besides Mrs Wilding and Miss Wilding, there were present Mrs Elworthy, Mrs Burns, Mr« Mac- | donald. Mis Loughnan, Mrs Bevan-Brown, 1 Mrs Chilton, Mrs Inman, Mr 9W. Mr and Mrs Greenwood are staying at Warner's. Mrs Randall is staving with Mrs Denniston, Peel Forest. Mrs C Gresson is at present in Christchurch, where she is staying with her sister, Mts H. Reeves. Mrs C. Wynn- Williams (Waikare) was in town for a few days last week. WELLINGTON, November 9. Mts Stott gave a very large "At home" on Tuesday afternoon in honour of Mrs and Miss Tolhurst, who have quite recently returned, from a visit to England. The very artistic rooms were gay with flowers. Mrs Stott wore a very becoming gown of pale pink floral taffetas and 1 tiny edgings of Vallenciennes lace. Mrs Tolhurst was handsomely gowned in black embroidered chiffon made over white glace silk, and her black and white ha-t was finished with ospreys. Miss Tolhurst's pretty frock was of pale blue chiffon taffetas with soft touches of lace; a small Tuscan straw hat with roses was worn. Mts Findlty wore a smart navy blue and white striped silk gown, and l hat to match; Mrs F. M. B. Fisher, deep rose cloth gown and hat of same shade; Mrs D. Nathan, cream cloth, tailor-made, and large black hat with feathers; Mrs J. Tripe, p«le blue cloth and becoming brown hat ; Mrs T. Young, cream glace silk gown and rose hat; Miss Laing-Meason, kwn Eton costume and black hat ; Miss Somerville, soft brown silk and pretty hat with wallflowers; Mis 3 Partridge, green tailormade, and smart hat. Bishopscourt will be occupied after January next by Colcnel Tuson and his family during- the aosence of Bishop Wallis and his wife in England. Miss Martha Grace (Wanganui) is in town for a few days. The Wellington College sports were held to-day, many very pretty frocks being worn by the guests present. Mrs Firth wore a very charming gown of pale mauve chiffon taffetas, and picture-hat trimmed with shaded mauve feathers. Lady Ward wore a. fawn Eton costume and black hat with plumes. Lady Stout's gown was of black and white strrlped silk, and black toque with white feathers; Miss E. Ward, rosepink costume, and black crinoline straw hat clustered with roses; Miss G. Nathan, cream Eton costume and' burnt straw hat swathed with blue silk. Others present were Mesdames Brandon, Bothamly, Waters, Beauohamp, and the Misses Brenmer, Wiggings, Webb, Fitzgerald, Fell. Jones, Dean, 'Natha-n, M'Kenzie, Pollock, Brandon, Perkins, and Brindley. Miss Dean gave a bridge party on Wednesday night for Miss Tolhurst, to which about 30 guests were invited. On Friday evening an enjoyable little flance was given at Government House by the Hon. Kathleen Plunket. The floral decorations were of guelder roses- aoid rhododendrons. A graceful gown of eau de nil chiffon was worn by Miss Plunket. Miss Boyle (Christchurch), who is a guest at Government Hoxise, wore a dainty frock oi soft white silk; Miss Kettle, white chiffon over glace silk : Mrs A. Pearce, flowered chine silk; Mrs C. Crawford, effeotive gown of black sequined net; Mrs A. Duncan, white Liberty saitn with silver tissue finishings; Mrs Dymock, pale blue crepe-de-chine; the Misses Simpson, white book muslins; Miss Tweed, pale blue satin; and Miss G. Harcourt, rose-pink silk. Mr and Mrs Algar Williams have returned to Wellington from their wedding tour. Mrs A. Brandon left this morning on a. trip to Rotorua. Mfc and Mies Percy were passengers to Sydney by the Maheno yesterday. Miss Bennett, who has been staying with, her sister, Dr Agnes Bennett, returned to her home in Australia- this week. Mrs Gore-Martin (Wanganui) has been in town for gome days. Mrs Brandon, Hobson street, gave a " tea " in honour of Mrs Wallis, who leaves for England next week. Three Christchurch girls — the Misses Boyle, Barker, and Kettle — are staying at Government House. The Misses Beauchamp entertained several girl friends at croquet on Thursday afternoon. Mrs Joseph (Grant road) gave a delightful girls' tea for her nieces, th» Misses Joseph, who have recently returned from England. Quantities of laburnum decorated the pretty rooms; and a string band and a fortuneteller added to the enjoyment. Mrs Joseph wore a gown of_navy biue and white silk and much pretty" lace. Some of the guests were Miss Joseph, Miss E Joseph, Mies G. Nathan, Miss Fell. Miss Miles. Miss Ruby Seddon, Miss Watson,- Misssa Logan, JJiss Z.
